My younger sister was diagnosed with schizophrenia years ago while in her early teens. All treatments have been ineffective, and she is often depressed and somewhat suicidal. i have read that a schizophrenic is much more likely to smoke weed -and i wonder if this is because schizophrenics can recieve benefits from smoking reefer.

i was hoping anyone who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia could explain y u use it, how it makes u feel, and if it has any effect on symptoms from schizophrenia .

iwould also be interested in schizophrenics who smoke cigs as ive read a higher percent of schizophrenics smoke ciggarettes than the general population because it may help temporarily fix a chemical balance in the brain. oh and my sister has never tried weed (im the stoner) thx for any input.

  2. Well you are right about schizophrenia in what you read I would say for the most part. I have schizophrenia, smoke weed every day and cigs.
My shrink has told me that what you have written is true but they don't know why this is.
For me smoking weed relaxes me a lot and keeps me calm. I smoked before I was diagnosed but I found I smoke more now and enjoy it in a different way.
Same with cigs but it has a different effect on me. I just like doing it even though I know its unhealthy.
Its not the case for all people who suffer from schizophrenia though. Some of them have extreme paranoid feelings after smoking weed. So it really depends on the person and thank goodness I'm not one of them.:smoking:

I'm not a scientist or an expert here, but I've been hearing that people who have schizophrenia currently, or have had family members with it should not try drugs...or something like that.

Or maybe they just shouldn't try hallucinogens. One of those, I think. Hopefully you'll get some scientific answers :)

Although, at least in my psychology class, marijuana is considered a mild hallucinogen.

  4. I'm not one but I hav read that people who have schiz should not smoke weed. I'm not sure how reliable my sources are but I would do dome research and get some scietifically proven info b4 u let her try it. But that is eat I hav read...

  5. I have mild schizophrenia and am really only symptomatic when stressed or tired. I find that if I smoke whilst having an episode it makes my symptoms far worse as the herb distorts my perception of reality.

However if I smoke when I'm fine, then nothing happens. It calms me down as well meaning I'm less likely to become stressed and have an episode.

It really does depend on the person. Its one of those diseases where everyone is different. Oh and schizophrenics have a higher rate of use of all drugs including alcohol, cannabis and harder drugs. Some experts think drug use causes the psychotic problems and others think its the other way around, that they feel the need to escape "normal" reality because of their psychosis.

EDIT: As for whether it would help, its quite unlikely and people with mental illness really should try to avoid psychoactive drugs (including cannabis)

  6. It's not that Schizophrenics are more likely to try weed, but people who are genetically predisposed to develop Schizophrenia may develop it earlier. If you have no genetic links to a Schizophrenic though, it cannot cause it.

  7. This is the subject of much medical debate. We understand neither cannabis nor schizophrenia very well so how the two react is VERY uncertain

  8. Aye aye, but there is no way in that cannabis can be claimed to be a cause.

Put it this way, approximately 1 in every 10 000 pot smokers develop schizophrenia, now that doesn't indicate a casual relationship. Though I do believe that a large number of schizophrenics do smoke weed so I really don't know.

It's all very interesting from a psychological standpoint.

  9. I'm on the side of the argument that its an increased desire to alter ones mental state, which also explains increased users of alcohol and hard drugs.

My wife's cousin who is 19 years old is currently being held at a mental hospital because he suddenly started having major schizophrenia symptoms. We're still trying to determine if it actually is schizophrenia. We learned from his brother that he had been using cocaine and ecstasy alot lately so the doctors think that its possible he could have been predisposed to it and the drugs may have triggered it.

When he was released temporarily last week he was CHAIN SMOKING cigs one after another. I visit him at the hospital as much as I can and he's always talking about how much he loves weed and cant wait to smoke a blunt when he's out.

EDIT: According to this article, researchers believe that the anti psychotic drugs could be the cause:

  11. Tell her to pop a 800mg pill of seroquel and smoke a blunt to the dome, that will have her feeling just right :)

  12. Well i dont think my sister knowsim a stoner, and im pretty certain she hasnt tried weed and i dont plan on changing that any time soon. id see ciggs as having some potential benefit from my own use. i think ciggs could help her concentrate and socialize, and in her case it might be worth the health problems, or she could vape. i dont actually plan on sugesting this though as the costs would be high, and the benafits uncertain. but i know my sister is unhappy and hopes for an early death and thats almost as bad as being dead.

  13. haha yea just right as in rust right before she is mindfucked and blacks out. dont push seroquel on anyone i know so many people that fucked thier shit in a bad way messin with anti-psychotics and other such meds chasing some dumb high.

  14. Indicas high in CBD that have a narchotic effect like black hand rubbed hash, are in my expierience anti-psychotic. I've found that Sativa dominent weeds that are introspective are bad when feeling low or uncomforable. However everyone needs introspection. Everyone is different but there is something in weed for us all. Peace.

  15. Actually i would not give her any weed. I am not being a hard ass either, i do believe weed is medical for a lot of things but schizophrenia is one. When someone has something like that they often need anti-psychotics and weed is quite the opposite being psychoactive. Although it may make her feel better it has the potential to worsen her schizophrenia.

  16. You are over-valuing cigs, the only reason people feel calm after smoking a cig is the fact that it calms your nicotine withdrawal. If you are new to smoking a headrush can also be achieved.

  17. long term heavy weed use increases cognitive ability in schizophrenics... also in people with most disorders associated with the temporal lobe....will post link when and if i find it.....sorry i dont have it on hand

  18. That does not mean anything, someone who has schizophrenia himself even said that it makes his episodes worse when he smokes during them. Although if it isn't too bad (seeing shit everyday) i could see it keeping a shizo calm enough to not have an episode. But i would recommend she only smoke heavy indicas.

  19. its not the same for everyone......not much is

I will see about those links....
