Shortly after the 2004 elections it became apparent that the Democratic party needed a new leader and a new direction. We believed - and continue to believe - that the Democratic party needs Russ Feingold in particular. Senator Feingold has been a member of the United States Senate since 1992. He currently serves on the Committee on the Judiciary, the Committee on Foreign Relations, the Committee on the Budget, the Special Committee on Aging, and he is a ranking member of the Constitution Subcommittee and the Africa Subcommittee. In particular, it is worthy to note that Senator Feingold knows the inner workings of the U.S.' foreign relations and that he is well known as a staunch advocate of balanced budgets. Senator Feingold is a man of principle and reform; of this there can be no doubt. He was the only member of the United States Senate to vote against the USA PATRIOT Act. And with good reason. In fact, before the PATRIOT Act was passed, Feingold called former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft to express his concerns about why the PATRIOT Act might overstep sensable boundaries. Ashcroft agreed with Senator Feingold, but was ultimately overruled by the rest of President Bush's cabinet. Senator Feingold also voted against the war in Iraq because he didn't believe that the war was necessary or wise, but then he voted for the $87 billion to support the troops once the war was underway. Simply put, his votes make sense. Feingold is also well known for his advocacy of reform. Working with Senator John McCain (R-AZ), Feingold was able to pass the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform. While we - and Senator Feingold - readily admit that this bill was only the first of many steps which must be taken to clean up politics in the United States of America, no one can claim that this was not a step in the right direction and a clear signal of the future of campaign finance laws. Senator Russ Feingold is also against the death penalty for a number of reasons. He has introduced legislation that would issue a moratorium on the death penalty until the system that administers the death penalty can be closely reviewed by an independent commission. Every single time that Congress authorizes another pay raise for itself, Russ Feingold votes against the raise. When these votes pass, Feingold returns his raise to the national treasury. Perhaps most importantly, Senator Russ Feingold believes that every single American deserves health coverage that is as good or better than the plans that every member of Congress enjoys. Americans are paying the highest costs in the world for prescription drugs and health care coverage. Why is this? As we are the world's only superpower, we cannot treat our citizens with anything less than the utmost respect. We owe it to ourselves to make universal health care coverage a reality. With Senator Feingold's plan, each state would create its own plan to cover all of its citizens, and each state would then retain local control of its implementations if it decided to do so. Time and time again, Senator Feingold has proven that he is a man of passion, principle and common sense. And he is a man of his word. As much as any man or woman in the United States of America, Russ Feingold deserves the highest office in the land. We intend to get him there.(http://www.draftruss.com/3thecase.html) "I would have loved to have voted for it, but my view of my job is to do what I think is right, not to be cowed by the name of the bill." - Russ Feingold [on being the only Senator to vote against USA PATRIOT Act] <hr> Has anyone else heard of this man? Today was the first im hearing of him. Ive been looking over a range of sites with information on him. After feeling him out a little im beginning to think we may have a canidate worth voting for on our hands. Im not finding much information speicfically on the war on drugs, decrim, legalization etc..but he seems pretty consistant on issues with the words COMMON SENSE written all over them. America, we have someone who has a brain here! We still have a ways to go of course, and who knows where this will all take us, but If I have anything to do with it, I think Id like to see this guy be in the race. If not, win it. Hes questioning a lot of Bushs policys already as a member of the Senate. Many issues I feel the same way on. I think he may be a good voice for US-I can see him working for US. One thing that may be of concern is taxing. He voted against the lowering of taxes, but I cant help but smirk at the fact he didnt want any paycheck raises while he was in senate. voting his own raises down. hm! at the least, he is able to communicate and is demonstrating that he can make (common sense!) plans for the future and execute them as well. Just something to stick in your pipe and smoke.
I've never heard of him, but I'll never vote for a democrat... Sorry. I have very strong anti-abortion convictions, and won't vote for someone who supports the murder of innocent children... That's just MY opinion though - so keep the flaming to yourselves if you don't agree with me.
I don't like people at all, and even though I may agree with some of his points, I don't see a strong base to his campaign. He may get a few votes by being the only person who didn't vote for the patriot act, but most people have no fucking clue what the act is, and what it does, and so they agree with it.
actually i am usually strongly democrat or liberal but ive recently heard rumors about mccain and rudy running together. mccain might be one of the best republicans i know, he is one of the most liberal republicans so he might have my vote if he runs with rudy. i also think he is not against mj either. but i havent really done all my research on him. thats just my 2 cents
you know what i'd like to see, but wont get? McCain with your Feingold =) I really rather like McCain (even though he was being kinda dumb by expecting CONGRESS to require a PRIVATE organization to drug test. I'm sure i don't have all the information, but it's not a terribly 'small government' minded vote right there.) I like him anyways =)
lol cottons, the other day i saw these two fairly normal, sane looking guys standing at a street corner downtown carrying huge signs that said various anti-abortion things. One said something about God's Kingdom yadda yadda yadda and the other had a picture of an aborted baby. Friends of yours? EDIT: Oh, and about Feingold. He's a good man and a good politician. One of the only Washington figures who will even talk about campaign finance reform. But the fact is that no one knows who he is and most don't care. Does he stand a chance against somebody like Bill Frist in 2008? Hell no. If the Democrats are even gonna talk like they can do it in 2008, they CANNOT put any current Democratic senator or congressman on the bill. None of them have even a remote chance. I think it's time for the Dems to start considering some much more radical ideas, like maybe Oprah for pres? Think about it. Who would get more votes: some no-name liberal senator from Wisconsin who the Republicans can and will defame and deride in every conceivable manner or Oprah fucking Winfrey? OPRAH BITCHES.
