Rubbermaid grow temp. & fan questions

Discussion in 'Grow Room Design/Setup' started by Tyler23, Sep 19, 2009.

  1. Okay so after looking around the site and doing a lot of research on here I decided the best method for my first grow had to be somewhat stealthy when I needed it to be. So I decided to utilize the rubbermaid grow room ideas and construct something similar on my own. My materials are as follows:

    2 37gal Rubbermaid Roughneck's
    2 rolls of foil tape
    3 Desk Lamp's
    3 Y-splitters
    6 26w Daylight CFLs
2 small 4" Massey fans I bought at Wally World for a lil more circulation
    2 Silverstone fans(120mm, 2400RPM, 110.03CFM, DC12V, .50A, 3.26mmH20)
2 Scythe Ultra Kaze High Static Pressure fans(120mm, 3000RPM, 133.60CFM, DC12V, .60A, no SP rating but says high right in the name and they are 38mm thick fans which is thick for a PC fan)
1 NZXT Sentry 2 Touchscreen Fan controller with individual temp. sensors
    1 550w Antec PSU
    1 Digital Timer
    1 Thermometer/Hygrometer

I'm currently experimenting with my setup only running 4 26w CFLs currently lighting up 9 little guys only for the time being. 8 of which broke dirt on 9/12 and the other was left in the water glass during germination and grew about a 3/4" tap root. So I decided to experiment with it n see if I could still get it to sprout and it broke soil on 9/16 and seems to be doing fine.

Anyways, even with the fans all at 100% I've been somewhat struggling with temps getting up to around 87 degrees or so at the end of my 18/6 cycle every night and leveling out to around 78 in the morning before the lights come back on. I still have 1 fan leftover that can be added. I also would like to switch out the Silverstone fans being used for exhaust and install the 2 Scythes for exhaust as they run at 3000RPM and .60A opposed to the Silverstones at 2400RPM and .50A and make one of the Silverstones my intake fan. This wouldve been done this way initially but the Silverstones came in the mail first and I wasnt planning on it making much of a difference.

So, what would you guys do? Install another intake fan? Install another exhaust fan? Or possibly something else? I am always open for suggestions!

  2. The only way you're going to get that box any cooler is if you put cooler air into it.

What is the ambient temp in the room the box is in? Im willing to bet it's 75.

Bowl of ice by the intake...

portable or window a/c feeding it air...

mini fridge + duct tape + imagination...

This would probably be your best bet, you could possibly rig it to a container of water infront of the intake fan which would draw cool air into the box.

    Coolworks Ice Probe Nano

  3. The ambient temp fluctuates between 65 and max 75 on any given day its hanging around 83 right now and the plants seem to be looking good still. Thanks for the suggestions though that ice probe looks very tempting. I'll also try out the bowl of ice thing whenever I get around to it. I'm also gonna be having questions about some of my plants that I have regarding nutes and I have one plant that looks different than the others. So I'll supply pics and another post here in a bit.

  4. wow. im doing a rubbermaid grow box too and mine is 30 gal, plus im doing hydro. im going to suscribe because that touchscreen is bad ass bro.

btw i have mine setup near my A/c o alot of cool air is getting sucked in.

hey what did you use to cut the rubbermaid

  5. I just threw in a new razor in my box cutter and went to work on em. I noticed that if you make a good outline using a lil pressure and if you push on the inside and outside afterwards you can get it to morph enough to crease and break off. I cut all of my holes smaller than what they needed to be and then used the box cutter to sculpt it to the perfect size.

I ordered the touchscreen off of Newegg it was only $29.99! The best part is that it has 5 individual temperature sensors that can be placed in different places in the box. They're rather short but the controller is fairly high up in the box. Its still useful to place one on top the soil, one by the light, and one on the side of both upper and lower containers. Anyways, for $30 I think it was a great purchase, some people on newegg had some bad reviews saying some parts of the touchscreen stopped working. Up until now I have yet to have any problems with it and am very happy with the purchase. :yay: Here's a link to the fan controller.
