Rso like sludge after decarbing.

When I cooked off all the alcohol in my rso it was very liquid and had no chucks or sludge-like liquid. Now that I just decarb it's half liquid and half sludge in the bottom. Did I burn it well cooking off the alcohol? Not sure why it went to sludge after reheating it to decarb.

  2. Not the best picture but you can see how thick it is at the bottom of the jar 20230101_100836.jpg

  3. Decarb first 240 F for 40 minutes.
    Make tincture.
    Reduce to Tar.

Once I'm down to tar and oils I add a eyeballed matching amount of Coconut oil and work them together as the Coconut oil will act like a solvent and free the tar sludge from the dish.

If you plan on filling capsules with it you'll need to cook off any remaining water as even the smallest traces will melt the capsules destroying your work.

I heat the blended RSO tar and Coconut oil at 250 F until it stops bubbling and foaming and is completely still signifying all the water has been cooked out.

Now I'll add my 20% Lecithin and process an additional 20 minutes at 220 F. Once that is done it is finished and can be placed in capsules.

  4. Ok, thanks. 1st time making rso. I thought once warmed up it would be mostly liquid, not tar-like. Is there any way to find out how much thc I got per gram I got without having it lab tested? I ended up with just under 88 grams from 3.5 gallons of the tincture.

@Imnew , What strength alcohol was used to make the tincture? The liquid may be some residual water from the alcohol and if so would need to be gently cooked off.
Of course the lower the proof of the alcohol used to make the RSO the more water you have to cook off.
If you know the percentage of THC in the bud used to make the tincture we can figure it out, How was the tincture made? How much bud was used? 88 grams sounds like a good return from tincture. That must have taken some time. Good job. Would love to know the whole process. What are you planning to do with it?

  6. I'm able to make my own. So this run came over around 93%. I'm going to lowball the thc% and go with 17%. I used around 1.5 pounds. Took me about 12 hours to boil down that tincture. I put all the weed in an 8 gallon pale. It took about 2 gallons of alcohol to cover. Mixed with a big wooden spoon for about a half hour. Poured off the alcohol and poured in the other 1.5 gallons of alcohol and mixed again for about 30 minutes. Pressed all the alcohol out using an old pillowcase. Then stained 4 times cleaning the pillowcase between each strain. I'd like to make 10 to 20mg capsules.

  7. I estimate a strength of 1000 mg per gram.
That's using the figures for 1.5 lbs or 24 ounces of 17% cannabis and assuming extraction of 80%.
That gives you 50 capsules at 20 mg/ capsule for each gram of RSO. Amazingly potent.

    one ounce @ 17 % = ~ 4000 mg /ounce @ 80% extraction X 24 ounces = 96,000mg / 88 grams RSO = ~ 1,090 mg/gram

  8. When I started making rso I'd get some sludge. Could be....
    Too high heat.
Too close to the heat, double boiler works nice
Too long of a soak , you might have plant matter ,waxes that cooked some.
Didn't do a cold extraction, the cold captures the junk.
You have some cotton fibers from the pillow case, ...cheese cloth and coffee filters work better.
If capsules are too strong, freeze and cut into smaller pieces .

  9. I found a lab that tests home growers' cannabis and oils. Think I will send them a sample and get an accurate thc level from them. For 60 bucks and free shipping don't think I can go wrong.

  11. At one time I'd gladly pay $60 for a test but I'm lazy so I do a bioassay on myself by comparing the effects of a known amount of my oil with the effects of an edible with a known potency. I understand the pitfalls of this method but it's easy, cheap, and enjoyable. That would also describe my first real girlfriend, now that I think about it.

  12. I've done this same thing as well Ed when my friend and I swapped 5 of my Capsules for 5 of his 50mg medical grade RSO dispensary gummies. We figured 5 was enough days in a row for a real world test. They were very close with mine having an edge in strength and duration. Not bad considering I'd guessed and pegged mine at 75mg. We both agree mine are the winners with a cleaner, sharper focused stone and far less clumsy then his store edibles have.

  13. Another thing that creates sludge besides water is empty trichome husks. I don't think a pillowcase is adequate to filter them out.

  14. When I make apple pie moonshine I filter out the cinnamon sticks pulp using a high thread count pillowcase. As coffee filters never do as good of a job. But next time I will try the coffee filters and see if that makes a difference.

  15. 1000mg is a gram. That would be 100% thc.

I would estimate a strength of 60-80%. Meaning 600 to 800mg of THC per gram. So if you made 60 capsules out of a gram, they would be 10-13mg per capsule.

  16. What this guy said ^

You shouldnt have to soak more than a couple minutes.

I do a "cold filter" where once I have reduced the alcohol down to about a quart, i freeze it and run it through a coffee filter. Do the whole process in the freezer you have to pour some, wait, pour more, wait and so on; it takes a little while. You can still do the same thing you just have to add some alcohol, filter, and then evaporate it off. The pillow case is fine for the bulk stage but at some point, everything has to go through a proper filter. Also, 3.5 gallons is a LOT. I run material through a food processor, mostly to reduce the size of it, and I use maybe a gallon per pound. Probably less i don't remember for sure. Also, last time i used my instant pot to evaporate the alcohol off I think i used the "low slow cook" setting if i remember correctly. It worked very well. Also recommend doing it outside for that extra safety factor but with the instant pot, at least there is no flame.

  17. I'm learning a lot from everyone on here. This was my first year growing and trying to make rso, tincture, and hash. I appreciate all the help I've received over the last couple of months. I'm sure I will have more questions soon.
