Rotten cannabis butter?!

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by Gottagrow1k, Dec 12, 2012.

  1. So this would of been the second time ever making butter from my left over crop..I made about 2 pounds of unsalted butter...followed the directions the best of my knowledge (know how to properly bake) and used about a pound over the last month..so I had about a # left over stored in a zip lock baggie in the fridge...I had a craving last night for delicious goodies..so I dove into the fridge only to find out upon opening the bag...that it smelled rotten :/ So alas I tossed it.. Gets better!
I woke up this morning too find my dogs passed out on the couch..not out of the norm..but then they wouldn't move..and when I made them they were all gimping around. I was concerned it was something with their hips..but then saw my over turned trash can only to see the remains of...you guessed it..the pot butter bag. Damn dogs :devious: Only the zip portion remained. So the dogs are really baked right now.
I have a 60# coon hound that can't walk now and had been asleep for 8 hours straight... And a 10# mini shitzu..think the little one is in worse shape than the hound..:(
guess they'll have to just ride it out... I sure wouldn't of eaten it the way it smelled!...
My question tho...is why would my butter have gone bad? I did put it in a cooler for our 1200 mile move a few days after I made it...but it was only out of the fridge for a day or two max. Its also winter..soo heat shouldn't of been an issue.. And I know ppl that keep regular butter out on the counter for use.. Not sure if its the same with canna butter. Just wounding what others thought.. Thanks for the read!

  2. Gosh I don't know. I freeze mine.

The story of your dogs is funny. I've had my dog eat bud before.

  3. You might not have strained it fully

  4. Hmm maybe... I thought freezing de graded it...at least read that somewhere... Yeah..dog has been slurping straight for 8 hours... Like coma..pick her up eyes rolled back..she has eaten like an 1/8 before and been pretty messed up..but I can't imagine a whole # of butter!..more details tomorrow lol

  5. Slurping = sleeping... Damn auto spell

  6. Well everybody who ate my Chocolate covered Canna Bombs loved them. I always freeze my butter. I've never had a problem.

Thank you Kitty for the recipe.

  7. I'll have to try freezing next go around. Is there a shelf life for canna butter?..its been a whole day and still stoned puppies :/ kinda jelouse...

  8. I also freeze my green tasty butter. Doesnt hurt it a bit. I think you read that about bud? Freezing bud can make the trics burst and fall off. Sense the butter is just fat with thc it doesn't effect potency. Just my .02

  9. I've heard to always freeze butter, even portions you are 'using', as in never in the fridge. You are adding lots of things to the butter which can decompose. I make capsules of coconut oil and always keep them in the freezer. Then again, I make a coconut oil cream, which I keep in the fridge, which has never rotted on me.

    Hmm . . . . :confused_2:

  10. Butter contains moisture and milk proteins/solids which together can spoil, especially when in contact with foreign plant matter... if you don't clarify your butter beforehand, not only is it a much less effective and less efficient solvent for cannabis glandular materials, but it invites in more plant sugars, salts and chlorophyll, and combined with the milk proteins, its storage life for the fridge can sometimes be as little as two to three weeks before beginning to go off.

Clarified canna butter, made with properly decarbed and dry flowers, is much more pantry stable, even up to a year or longer, particularly if made and heated in canning jars, so the lids are allowed to 'pop' when cooled. Coconut canna oil has a similarly long (longer actually) shelf-life due to its lack of moisture and proteins. :hello:

But to slow and prevent continuing chemical reaction/oxidization and preserve your cannabinoids (for instance THC slowly forms to CBN as it ages, then degrades) in the condition they are in, it's a good idea to freeze your oils, butters and freezer-appropriate edibles when possible.... decade-old canna oil, sealed well and kept in the freezer, will often be roughly just as good in terms of potency, as the day you made it. :)

(And keeping in mind that GC has a strict policy against discussing animals being stoned, even when it is accidental: In the future, store and dispose of any spoiled canna oil or unwanted flowers more responsibly! Treat it like any other medicine. You can always keep it in a cupboard or the fridge until trash day :)

Some animals are much more sensitive to chemicals than we are, dogs in particular; with conditions we each have that can be treated with similar medications, pound for pound, dogs require a fraction of the medicine we do, due to the sensitivity and efficiency of their digestion systems and their livers.
In terms of toxicity, a one hundred pound human requires between four and ten times the dose that a one hundred pound dog can withstand, before reaching a toxic level.
Dogs also have more sensitive hearts, and are much more prone to heart disease.. the cannabis itself may not be toxic, but stress-induced heart attacks are problems that dogs of all ages have more trouble with than humans, and that aside, PTSD is not just a human ailment. If you traumatize a dog, some certainly perk right back up, but there's no guarantee that he or she will ever be the same.)

  11. Hmm...very informative..all around.. Its not like I intended for the dog to eat a whole # .Well I hope she recovers I'll leave it at that. Thanks for the knowledge.

  12. Speaking about oils and what not.. Do you get a bigger punishment/fine..if caught.. for having concentrated cannabis Vs nugs ?

  13. there is a HUGE difference between marijuana in plant form and concentrates- check NORMLs state info section for all the details in your area
in NY the consequences for having concentrates is
Possession of up to 1/4 oz\tmisdemeanor\t1 year in prison\t$ 1,000 fine
    Possession of 1/4 - 1 oz\tfelony\t7 years prison\t$ 5,000 fine
Possession of 1 oz or more\tfelony\t15 years prison\t$ 15,000 fine
    Sale\tfelony\t15 years prison\t$ 15,000 fine

    for marijuana its
    Possession
    Less than 25 g (first offense)\tnot classified\tN/A\t$ 100 fine
    Less than 25 g (second offense)\tnot classified\tN/A\t$ 200 fine
    Less than 25 g (third offense)\tnot classified\t15 days in jail\t$ 250 fine

  14. So does concentrated mea that pot brownies... Or just having butter in fridge is the same crime? Felony ? I tried a product from a festival worker this summer called "ear wax" (which was the shit..). That was nothing but concentrate. I can see doing time for large amounts of that..but brownies?...
On another note..took the dog 3 days or so to recoup :/

  15. Dude, concentrates kill people all the ti . . .

    Oh wait. No, never mind.
    They are harmless. As well.

    Ignorance.

  16. dude ear wax is dope, straight from buddah!

concentrates are any hashish type sustance (oil, wax, bubblehash, shatter, ect)
check out some pics man their beautiful and get you :hippie:

  17. glad yours dogs ok btw hope he enjoyed the ride
