Roots stunted on one, not on another. Hydro

  1. I've got two seperate ten gallon reservoir set ups. Multiple strains. For this question, I'm going to use just 1 strain to keep things simple. (All grow details can be found here: http://forum.grasscity.com/grow-journals/131319-4-strains-hydro-closet-1st-grow.html )

2 plants, one in each res. Sour NL x Nev. Haze. female seeds.nl (I'll call them X1 and X2)

One plant (X1) has stunted roots. What could cause this? All of my plants looked like this (stunted) until I added Hygrozyme on 2/24. Since then, X2's roots have grown like CRAZY, while X1 has stayed the same.

Both reservoir have the same nutes added. The only difference is the water in res. 1 is from a purified source (starting ppm of 4), and water in res. 2 is from my tap (well water starting ppm of 98). Would this be enough of a difference to stunt the roots like that? The hygrozyme has worked wonders in 1 res, not so much in the other.

Both plants look healthy above root level. What other conditions would cause the roots to look like this? Any help would be appreciated!

  3. I dont do hydro, but Ill help troubleshoot till one of the hydro guys show up

    2 reservoirs, 2 water sources........hmmmm

you didnt say which water the stunted roots were in...... tap or purified

and what is the PH of each reservoir?

and what is the temp of each reservoir?

  4. Well, the plants have been in the purified water all along (since January 1st). All plants had those stunted, nasty looking roots until about a week ago. Last week I changed one res, using tap water (well water) (aged 3 days), and I added Hygrozyme to both reservoirs. Well, the roots in the res with the tap water have exploded, as you can see in the pic above. The roots in the other res have stayed the same (a few new white roots, but not growing long). My PH is hard to control when I use the tap water. It starts around 7.5 before I add anything. I then add nutes and adjust the PH to 5.8. The next day, PH was up to 6.8 (my res. are 10 gal each). This morning, I adjusted to 5.7 before work. When I got home 9 hours later, PH was 6.5. I adjusted down to 5.9. A half hour ago it was at 6.2. The purified water seems to be more stable. (less bicarbonates than the tap?) Res temps are 68F (20C). I occasionally put frozen water bottles in the res, which can bring it down to 58-60F (14-16C).

5 out of 7 plants are showing pre-flowers. This weekend I'm going to change both reservoir, and switch the light to HPS on 12/12.

  5. Since changing both res and adding fresh nutes and Hygrozyme, all my roots are looking great.:hello:

I'm using my tap water in both res. now, instead of the purified water (which i found is RO). I don't believe the water would make that much of a difference in growth. I have to say it's the hygrozyme. I'm no expert, so anyone feel free to offer their opinions.
