Roots are brown and underdeveloped (pythium or light exposure)?

  1. Hey fellow farmers! I've been growing for about 2 years now and I'm still working out the kinks. I believe I'll be doing this forever though, just a part of the business I guess.

I am growing 8 plants at a time under 2x 400W HPS (flower) and a buttload of CFL's (veg). I have them in a clay pellet medium in net pots inserted into a rubbermaid aeroponic system I built (water pump and sprinkler head). I use General Hydro flora, micro, and bloom and Purple Maxx and Kool Bloom as additives during flower.

Ever since I can remember, some roots will turn brown and remain underdeveloped. I find it weird because often times her sister plants in the same bucket will show great root growth and a bright white color.

I was originally thinking that it could be a Pythium issue (root rot) but I would almost assume that if it were on one's roots it'd be on the others? Possibly light exposure because my rubbermaid bins are light grey but probably let through about 50% light from the HIDs.

    Can anyone help?

  2. might wanna paint ur rubbermaid lid. to get the light outta the picture. and id give ur babys some rhizotonic from Canna . ive never seen any roots healthier. rhizo treats root rot. strongly recommend it
    good growing much luck

  3. Im not a hydro grower, just soil. But would there ever be a possibility of other roots maybe kinking off others? Or if not light, nutes or anything like that, could it be if the roots were bumped or disturbed too much? lol I dont know im just throwing that out there, when I think of roots like that though, I think of light exposure, but thats just me.

---I clone using a DWC though, never in there long enough to get brown on me.

  4. I just switched over to black bubble buckets from my 6 plant rubbermaid and couldn't be happier.I was successful in keeping the light out, but jumped through hoops.Aluminum tape on the lid and black plastic sheeting on the sides worked for me.I doubt it has much to do w/ the nutes unless the ppm is way to high, but then the leaves would show too.I touch and move my roots regularly,w/ clean wet hands is best.Just be gentle.I suggest sealing the light out,or switching to a light proof container.Maybe get some h202 in your res w/ fresh water.Good Luck!!

  5. Thank you fellas for the wise input. Judging by your suggestions and process of elimination I do believe that the light is the issue. I rarely work on my garden during the night (when the lights are on) so I guess I've never really noticed the amount of light coming from the 800w and into the rubbermaid. I have a buttload of black Guerilla Tape that I could use for the lids and plenty of that white/black sheeting stuff. Thanks again guys.
