Roly Polys?

Discussion in 'Sick Plants and Problems' started by Evolved, Jun 6, 2009.

  1. I dunno what they are called world wide but it's what we call woodlice here in the south. I've been googling and searching here but haven't really found anything, although I've heard they can cause root damage perhaps? I seen one or two, not really sure, crawling around the base of my plant the past couple days. Should I be concerned?

Short end of the evolutionary stick right there pal. A face only a mother could love!!:smoke:

  3. Lol thats what we called them, and still do. Use to get a kick out of em when i was a kid lol. As long as there aren't many I don't think it would be a problem. Are you growing indoors or out?

I would think a good way to get rid of them would be to stop watering for a few days and let the humidity drop. Although I've never had a roly poly before so I'm not 100% sure.

  4. Indoors, in a side room of my garage. It stays pretty humid in there plus I have my exhaust fan hooked up to pull fresh air from outside into the room (which is probably the route this guy took to begin with). I'll watch for more, but I really think this guy was just lost. I threw him out into the middle of my back yard lol. He's probably been travelling up toward the house for a week or two now. He probably landed and looked around and said to himself..."Ahhh...SHIT" :smoking:

  5. well i must make this my very first post because because i found out first hand about these lil bastards, and i dont want you to have probs so maybe me adding this will bring on more advise because after what i seen you need to get rid of them. let me tell you what happend, my wife had broke a rose off so i cut it and i had some soil under deck from last year, so i put rose in it and had it on back deck and i seen a few roly's i thought oh i use to kick them too lol ... so next day i had a seedling that looked messed up(now it was not but about a day old maybe 1/2 inch in a pete puck, so i wanted it out but did not want to give up on it jus yet, so i took it out and just sit the pete puck on the soil beside the rose, i came back the next morning and holy crap there were 2 of them sitting on the seedling ! i was ok well it just a roly it be ok... well i come home that afternoon and they where all 3 gone 2 roly's and the seedling ! they ate all of it i could not find anything, so i just wanted to give this info. i dont know what effects they would have on larger plant but i know they can eat a seedling so im guessing they would have no trouble with roots, so i would say you need some help to get rid of them and find the way they got in. just my 2 cents :smoking: hope it helps

  6. Lol that shits funny. A little trick to keep critters from entering through your exhaust fan is get some panty hose and cover the ducting up with it somewhere. It works as a great little bug screen, just make sure to check it on occasion.
