RockWool Questions

  1. Hey guys im going be switching over to hydro and have chosen to grow in roclwool but i has some questions google just cant answer

1)the biggest thing i seem to come across is PH instability,I know about pre soaking, but i hear continued complaints from people saying the Ph is constantly going up and down..is that just thier fault of is that an actual issue Rockwool growers face?

    2) Can you grow using organic Nutrients in rockwool? also can you use such products as Piranha and Voo doo Juice from Advanced nutrients to boost microbial and bacterial lvl's in the rockwool?

    3) how often do you water ( i know light intensity,RH and ambiant room temp come into play ) when figuring out that question but is there a general rule of thumb?

    4) how often should i test my PH of the rockwool?

    5) What size of rockwool cube would best suit me? I see alot of people using the 3x 3x 3x cubes..is that sufficient cuzz i have seen larger ones like 4x n 6x n so forth...the plants only have to be in the cubes for roughly 90-95 days before i harvest

    thanks in advance peoples

    ~peace~

  2. you plan to put your rockwool into a netcup?

... I personally don't see the use of those giant rockwool cubes...

just use the 1x1 cubes to germinate... and stick that in hydroten... make sure to bury the rockwool and leave only your plant showing.. and your golden....

rockwool is ph unstable.. so the less of it you use the better....

you pre-soak it overnight before you germinate.... using ph corrected water.. its written on the bag that you purchase...

  3. I've seen people grow with the 4x cubes ebb n flo sytle with no medium, simply the cubes sitting on the tray..looked interesting any thoughts on the pro's and cons of doing it without a medium?

  4. it would work.. not my idea of fun.. but hey... to each his own...

I would advise against it.... hydroten is cheap.. and moveable

  5. Thanks Tihspeed for ur input bro :D

  6. this is great advice. if you want to use larger than 1" I would suggest using the 1" first then transplanting it into no larger than a 4" cube. but personally, I like to use the 1" then put in hydroton like tihspeed recommends. the pH of rockwool will raise your pH of your nutes consistently, so make sure you have some pH up.

    great advice tihspeed!+rep

  7. You should pre soak em with nutrients + phd water of 5.3-5.4 it will rise to 5.8-6.0 then on your second watering again with ph of about 5.5 and that will save you the headache of ph rising so much throughout ur plants cycle, . I've been using that method for now and never any problems. Now for your question regarding how often you need to water them is totally based upon how much root mass ur plants have and temp, humidity, air flow. You should lift the cube up after you water it to get familiar with how dry or wet it is and that should help you out.... Knowing when to water. Remember too wet ur roots don't get oxygen, too dry your plants will suffer the secret is to get it just right

  8. good info guys I had the same question but with do you germiate the seeds first an then put them into the rockwool an into the bubble bucket do you have to manually water the cubes till roots drop to the water or is the mostiure from the bubbles enough?

  9. you don't need to add nutrients for germination... the seed contains everything it needs...

others will argue... but it is not needed.. just ph'd water

  10. Could i grow a seed in 4x4 rockwool cube for like 3 weeks without nutes?

  11. Yes, it best not to use nutes until the seedling needs them. In fact using nutes to early usually causes problems like nute lockout, or bad nute burn also death. I never feed until about 2 to 2.5 weeks from start.

  12. I agree... I don't use any kind of nutes for germinating seeds, just superthrive or any other liquid that contains osme vitamin b1.... I do add nutes when I take cuttings though. I only use r/o water and 70-90 ppm never had any problems. That way as soon as the roots shoot out of the cutting they have some kind of nutrients ready to get sucked up. Not a single yellow leaf by doing that works like a charm all the time.

  13. you can but I wouldn't recommend it... 4x4 is too big for a seed it retains moisture very well and I think it will drown your newly sprouted baby. Go with 1"x1" cubes you can't go wrong with them

  14. yea i agree Stoneth in the fact that you dont need to use nutrients until week 3 easily...plants when there that young cant utilize any or all the Nutes so a salt tox will quickly occur if fed to regularly when young

also I've seen people grow in 6x6 cubes in a F/D system without any medium..which people say is bad,but the results beg to differ...so whats up with that? LOL

And thanks Lou for ur info bro..dont much care for ur name LOL but thanks
