Rockwool Question??????

Discussion in 'Hydroponic Growing' started by Germinating seeds question, Sep 18, 2014.

  1. How long does it normally take for roots to break through rockwool from seeding?

  2. Mine took about 2 weeks.

  3. Thanks, what week should the nutrients be used since the roots cant touch the water yet?

  5. I've only germ'd one seed in rockwool, but the tap root popped out of the bottom on day 5 from the time I put it in. This was in a 1.5 inch cube, by the way.

  6. Useful post! Thanks, mykee

  7. It depends on how deep your rockwool is, but usually only a few days, roots grow really fast.

You should not use nutrients until the cotyledons start to turn yellow.  At that point, I would suggest feeding a seedling with only about 200 PPM solution for a few days to get started.  Once it starts growing nicely, ramp that up by 100-200PPM per day up to about 1200PPM at the most (for a beginner, I wouldn't recommend going beyond that for now)  But your plant will do just fine at 600-700.

  8. Its the same for autoflower ?

I would say yes. I've grown autos using a scale pretty much the same as this. You have to be a little more careful with autos, though, they tend to be more sensitive to nutes.

  10. Depends really I've had then sprout only 4-5 days after putting it in rockwool

  11. If the conditions are good a seedling will grow its roots by a couple of inches per day.  But unfortunately getting good conditions in rockwool is not easy

  12. i popped 2 seeds recently, 1 i popped in a paper towel and then put in the 1.5 inch cube when the taproot was about 5mm long, took 3 days to break out of the cube, second i popped right in the cube and the taproot came out 4 days later

I think maybe if the pH is right in the rockwool, it should pop out after just a few days with the root coming not long after. Like I said, mine was after 5 days. I soaked the rockwool cube in pH 5.5 water overnight and put the seed in the next day. But ok, I guess temperature also plays a role in how long it takes.
