Friends, my office closet grow north of Pittsburgh set up: 2x4x5 tent, vivisun 4” fan (190 cfm) and filter venting outside the tent, spider sf2000 led light. Based on previous tips I cranked the light to highest setting and temp soared to 93 degrees. Not going to work. Even at the recommended 60% setting for early stage, I’m at 82 degrees. So here are my options and I’ll appreciate any suggestions: a) upgrade to 6” venting which will be a pita because I have to return a buncha crap b) rig some intake air from outside although this won’t help in warmer months (won’t help in the summer given 85 degree typical outside July high here) c) buy a lesser light although this one at 200 watts is just below the recommended power for this size tent. I’m at a loss and frustrated as I’ve done all the suggested ideas (adding an oscillating fan, moving the light’s driver outside the tent etc. ) Help appreciated.
It would be nice if you could purchase a mini-split 9000 btu unit to control temps. That would be the ultimate. Stuff like that costs $$$.
So the tent is in a room. The tent is vented, but how well is the room vented? I've installed a filterbox in the next room, which gets vented into the grow room. Its meant to filter the air, but I've also noticed a drop in temps. This could help for less money.
Just for reference and I hope it helps. I maintain 72° in my home. I have a 6-in fan pulling air out of a 3x3 tent so I'm moving quite a bit of air. I run 320 watts in that five square(2.5x2.5 I'd) foot space and I maintain about 83° max. I don't vent outside and I don't have to. If you can work with these metrics you should be able to maintain. I suspect that 4-in fan is not enough for that size tent. If you upgrade to 6-in spend the money on a good fan it will be quieter than the normal vivoSun type fan. A portable ac unit will be very helpful in maintaining temperatures. It will need to vent outside room.
Many thanks - yeah this thing is too loud. can you recommend a quiet six inch fan either by reply or privately ? Thanks.
first of all, two 4 inch fans beat one siz inch, so think adding rather than replacing. Many consider 82f optimum and shut off fans below 82f. Your light is pretty low heat and you would be splitting hairs to change it. Blowing cold air in beats blowing hot air out. In the end, ambient rules. If your ambient is 72f all you need to do is vent more ambient in. Those inline fans generate about as much heat as they exhaust.
My AC infinity is really quiet considering how much air it moves. The output is the noisy end and it sounds like you're putting that outside. Sent from my SM-G960U1 using Tapatalk
If you want quiet, you need a BIG fan running at LOW speed. An 8'' fan getting 50 watts will be whisper quiet while a 4'' fan getting 50 watts will sound like a jet engine. And to top it off, the 8'' will be moving more air. Mixflow style fans like Ac Infinity are not good at pulling air though filters. Once you hit a certain amount of static pressure (resistance to flow) it doesnt matter how much power you throw at them, they dont move any more air. While a centrifugal style fan holds a linear flow rate in comparison to static pressure (drag) As you can see, the mixflow style fans cant move any air once static pressure reaches a bit over 1.25 while the centrifugal fan still moves 150cfm at 2.5 which is double. Important fact: The bigger the carbon filter, the less drag and the better it will remove odor. I run a 10x39 carbon filter and a 8'' vortex vtx fan. I run it at 30% power to cool my 1000w HPS light. Im sure you could get away with a 6'' but you need the VARIAC controller to control speed (and more importantly noise). My money says you just have a really shitty fan and filter. Return them and upgrade to 6''. A cheap setup like this would be fine but this type of speed controller only lets you turn the fan down to like 50% and its still kind of loud in my opinion. I really dont like running fans over 40%.
No kidding. I think I actually sent the first one back thinking it didn't work. But now I see that a/c infinity is whisper quiet. I agree, it's the air that makes all the noise.
The only reason ac infinity can be whisper quiet is because they have a proper speed controller built into them. They can be turned down to 10%. The cheaper fans with cheap built in speed controllers can only be turned down to about 50%, no lower. Thats where the VARIAC voltage controller comes in.
Guess I’m upgrading to a bigger setup. Any thoughts on these sound dampners such as the ac infinity fan silencer?
idk man. I got a spiderfarmer 2000 model like you and am also running in a 2x4x5. I am using no fan atm, although the light is dimmed. I've never had to use more than a 4" booster fan. Its only a 2x4 ffs :/ My temps can get as high as 29C if its hot outside, but not normally. But I do have a humidifier in there that blows straight up, kinda like a swamp cooler. This talk about 6" and 8" fans, I'm thinking its mucho grando, overthetop. I grew my white lightsaber last May using just a 4" booster fan. I even had a couple QB96s (each one 240W drivers) and that's when it would reach 29C, but I'd just use the booster fan and the humidifier. I wouldn't get an 8". If you are going to do something like that, might as well just use the filter box to move air around, or invest in a heat exchanger. I'm sure you can find a smaller model on Alibaba for cheap enough. ps. the door is open because I was taking pictures. edit: u can clearly see the humidifier in the second picture.
