revert to 12/12 to sex to weed out males

  1. so i read this somewhere wondering if its true.

i'm wondering, can you force your plants to 12/12 early to sex them real quick and then revert back to veg that way you dont waste time growing possible males?

  2. Yep...

  3. yes but it really stresses the plants and they wont grow for 2 weeks after. its easier to take clones from your plants and once they root put them in 12 12 that way they tell you if they are males or females.

  4. ^This. I'm not sure I would say it stresses the plants, but it sure does extend your timetable. It takes a little while for the hormonal reactions to flower (or to not) to kick in, so you will take a week or more to get flowering going under 12/12, then a week or more to go back to veg, then later a week or more to flower again. Either take clones and flower the clones (be sure to label which came from which plant) or else just veg through and flip to 12/12 when you are ready to flower and then cull the males. Besides not slowing down your plants, another advantage to the clone approach is that you will double your number of females.

  5. this is AMAZING info thanks a lot +rep, so you are saying its better to snip stems from a vegging plant, grow those out and flower those instead of the orginals? OR with the originals?

  6. Well the first idea you have is is keeping a mother(where you take clones from) that just sits under veg and doesn't flower. If you have the space and availability to be able to keep mothers, then I definitely suggest it, you'll cut your timetable way down.

If you can't keep a mother, like I just explained, Toasty is telling you to take a clone from each plant and throw them in flowering to determine the sex of their mothers. Then you can either keep the clones and flower completely(if you have the space) or throw them away and throw away the male errr a....mothers.;)

  7. I had a similar question. I'm long time outdoor but trying indoor for 1st time. I'm a week into trying to early sex. I've noticed males usually sex earlier. QUESTION: Should I do 12/12 a few more days to see if any males pop up and assume the rest are female OR just switch back to 24 and do the clones?

  8. I'm saying to grow them separately because you are wanting to keep them on different light cycles -- your "original" plants stay on their veg cycle so that they are not jerked around, and the clones are put under 12/12 to sex them. Once you know which are females and feel it's time to flower them then all females (originals and clones) can be together under 12/12 to flower out.

How long have you been doing 12/12? If it's been more than a few days then you might as well stick with it, you already are in the process of inducing flowering so have already incurred the delays of switching back and forth. But if you just flipped like yesterday then I would get them back to veg ASAP and take clones to put into 12/12, again so as to avoid your "original" plants from getting their hormones jerked around.

  9. Yeah Im a week in already. I really appreciate the advice!!

  10. greatest thread i've read in a while thanks everyone.

  11. Hi all, I just had a room go male, like over night, i was watching pretty close, I'm wondering if my girls in veg who are separated only by panda paper could have gotten the switch too? I'm hoping that since she was in veg, she's still as she. Do tell. peace
