Reusing soil?

Discussion in 'Growing Organic Marijuana' started by Elf_7, Apr 26, 2023.

  1. Do people reuse their soil indoors? My soil right now seems to be very "active", if a leaf drops I can see how the soil creates a white kind of fungus and starts decomposing the leaf. However I am getting less yield every time I reuse the soil. I use biobizz light mix and use biobizz nutes. Is it possible there might be salt buildup, or shall I just get new soil every grow?

  2. soil growers reuse their soil but also typically stay away from bottled nutrients and salts. Its a bit of a growers evolutionary development where added grow experience provides you with the knowledge to stop wasting money on expensive bottles that can be done via organic methods at a 1/4 the price.

  3. I believe that line is organic? If so it would not contribute to any sort of salt buildup. What could lead to a salt buildup aka salinity, sodicity or alkalinity is your water source. Do you have a water report?

Many of us use the same mix for years. Compost, topdressing and maintaining a good mulch layer can go a long way.

  4. I'd add that this also depends on the volume of soil. I don't think many organic growers are using 1-5 gallons for years - but certainly larger containers (beds) like you use ERD!

  5. Ha! You should see me now growing autos in 10g bags. Finally ditched the soil I was using from 2017.

Yes it is organic. My tap water I think is about 7.2-7.5 PH, and I know it is poor quality (our neighbors constantly talk about that), but I don't have access to anything better than this. Still, I managed good grows with this water. But maybe it is causing salt buildup, I didn't know organic nutrients didn't cause that.

  7. pH is just one parameter that we should look at and in and of itself doesn’t tell us much. A water report would be useful - usually can be had for free if you’re on city water. If your water is out of whack then reusing your soil may not work very well until the water issue is addressed. I have no idea if it is ok or not it’s just a good thing to rule out or address right away.

Re use it alone, no but it goes into the mix for a future grow along with my compost, peat m, ewc's, shell compost, kelp etc. Throw away pumice  BUT I'm in the pee-wee leagues with my little grow. In the future I'm hoping the soil gets more "alive", finally got some rice hulls & am using the plants own defoliated leaves for mulch. The next grow app 7/23 will be :Love-Plant:
