Hey folks, It's pretty cold where I'm at and I'm facing rez and bucket temps of 55ish, and that is with a pump (that is supposed to heat the soup) running 24/7. I'm really not comfortable with that temp and was thinking of using a fish tank heater in my rez (which is a rubbermaid tote). Can anyone comment on how well it works using a aquarium water heater in a rubbermaid tote? My main concern is that it could melt through the plastic. What really are my chances of this? With my experience on these heaters (from owning fish) it's that so long as it stays under water it's good but the minute it is not under water it gets as hot as a curling iron. I have one in my turtle tank, and my dad about caught my place on fire whilst on vacay when he took out the heater (rookie). Anyway any suggestions? ideas? experience with using a fish tank heater in a tote? I used the search option to no avail.
put your res on something to get it of the ground. the slabs can suck out a lot of heat from the res.
wow are you looking in mah windows or what ? but yeah good idea and I will implement with the results in about a day.
keep me posted. you can change the spacer you use to adjust the temperature. it can also affect soil plants too.
Yeah that did the trick. Thanks for the free advice for a free solution! I'm now around 63-65 and feel really good about it.
Go to the pet store. You can get plastic heaters that are safe for plastics. They are a bit more pricey and come in different heat settings. Mine keeps the res about 25 - 26C but if it's cool in your grow it keeps it about 20-22 C. They have suction cups on the bottom so they stick to the bottom of the res. I put a bubble right next to it, this moves the water around it helps warming. Don't get the glass ones.
