[IMG] In this photo taken May 13, 2009 marijuana for medical purposes is shown inside a greenhouse at a farm in Potter Valley, Calif. In the mountain forests along California's North Coast, refugees from San Francisco's Summer of Love have spent four decades hiding from the law as they tended some of the world's most fabled marijuana gardens. After all those years, several statewide efforts to legalize marijuana could finally let those growers come out into the light. But at a community meeting in the heart of Northern California pot country on Tuesday, many growers said they were more worried about the cost of legalization to their bottom lines than about any federal raid. The California Republican Party just made it official: They are opposed to the effort to legalize and tax cannabis that is coming to the November ballot. No, we're not stopping the presses.

The Democratic Party will probably decide their position in July at their executive board meeting, a party spokesperson said.

Republican Party chair Ron Nehring said Wednesday that “The last thing California needs is hundreds of thousands of more people getting high, and the costs to society that would come from widely expanded drug use.”

  2. Huh. The Republican party getting all pissed off about change and trying to block progress. Now why doesn't THAT surprise me...

  3. stories like this, it is simply amazing that Obama recieves criticism i mean seriously, he promised change and thats what he is doing. Republicans are just being fucking stubborn

  4. Don't forget the fact that Obama has consistently laughed off legalization-related questions in public addresses (his town hall meeting and some college q&a). Granted, Obama isn't going out of his way to say he's anti-legalization, but aside from his stopping the medi-raids back when he came in he hasn't been too pot-friendly.

  5. Wait, tell me if I got this right. Republicans are opposing legalization and taxing of marijuana because it would cost too much to change?

  6. It will be hard for any President to take a side are you kidding me? You are talking about changing the nations view of marijuana to make it legal. There is still plenty of older generations who oppose it who are alive and kicking that will vote No until they die

  7. Its all a matter of time.....

lol ok, sick joke. Sorry old timers.

  8. Totally didn't get it until the last part. At this point I laughed and laughed and laughed...

Props to you and your humourous humour good sir :D

  9. i really REALLY hope legalizing marijuana doesnt fall into obama's promises of change and progress or whatever he thinks progress is

this has been a LONG time coming, long before obama even knew what weed was

i swear if he gets any credit for this im going to flip

  10. Yea, I really would hate the stigma behind Obama if it were legalized. He would pretty much become the new bob marley.

  11. You know what pisses me off? Read what they are saying. Every statement they make, they do so on meer beliefs, no proof, evidence, or even constructiveness to find out if it's possible it will be a good idea.

I just read this in the news section, by the way the red text is me.

    Arguments Against Legalizing Marijuana

Despite the possible help to the economy, there are some negative aspects of the bill, Adley said.

The bill should have included more restrictions on marijuana use in public places, he said.
First, they attack their writing skills.
It should have also increased the penalties for people who grow and distribute illegally in order to dodge taxes.
We need to make sure that we get every penny we can.

"It didn't include smoking in or around churches, daycares, parks or municipalities," Adley said.
Obviously, the "No Smoking" Signs in public areas will cover the indoors.
For outdoors, there are plenty of options. We aren't being picky.

Smoking marijuana also has possible health risks, including reduced sperm count and cancer, said senior Chris Thornton, a liberal studies major.
Cannabis is not nearly as cancerous as alcohol or worse yet tobacco. And you aren't complaining about that are you?

"There can be negative side effects with sexual reproduction and memory loss," he said. "While it might not have as much as an immediate side effect as alcohol, marijuana can be worse in the long run."
I love this one. Expecially the repetative use of the words "Can Be"
Tylenol, can be the cause of a weak immune system.
    Viagra
can be a cause of blindness.
    Alcohol
can be the cause of depression, anxiety, suicide, murder, child abuse, child neglect, spouse abuse, and all round violent behavior.

Ethics also plays a big role in the initiative, Thornton said.

"Many people view marijuana as just wrong," he said.
Many people do. Because it's been demonized since Hemp was banned when the woodcutting industry posed it as a threat, back in the day when it was a Mexican cigarette. But i digress..
You may not want to do it, and you don't have to. But for you to call people unethical that do something differently than you do, thats just plain UnAmerican.

    >In a sense,< the initiative can be viewed as promoting drug use, Shelters said.
    ^^^^^^^
it's tough to actually find out if there will be an increase in drug use.
I wonder why noone mentioned that 90% of the time, kids obtain illegal drugs from illegal drug dealers. And a percentage of people get hooked by buying laced grass. I thought you said "Regulate?" If this was regulated, and weed wasn't demonized as a hardcore drug, people would still look down on drugs and enjoy the herb of mother nature just as they do with alcohol and cigarettes.

"It's a very hard subject to study and to quantify," he said.
Because you refuse to try and understand what your opposing. And why.

More information on this topic can be found at the Chico Great Debate on April 29 in the City Council Chambers.

  12. I'm pretty sure Obama knew what weed was before you were even alive.

  13. im pretty sure i dont care

weed was illegal before all of us were born

  14. what does Obama have to do with the legalization of weed in California? Cali keeps electing a Republican governor.. so blame the people of cali.

  15. I don't think it really matters WHAT party we're talking about. Neither are eager to legalize MJ. They probably know that legalizing MJ will cost them votes.

I find it hilarious that people try to blame republicans for NOT legalizing weed. Weed is equally hated by ALL politicians including OBAMA.

  16. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ak7HBA5f-Y8]YouTube - Obama at townhall meeting March 26th on marijuana legalization[/ame]

  17. Equally hated by ALL politicians? Have to disagree. Barney Frank, Ron Paul, others, favor legalizing. I think Obama has it in his heart to loosen up marijuana laws, but in his current position, he has people he has to ansewer to. Face it. Republicans and conservatives have a stick up their ass when it comes to legalization. And they love to admit it. Just watch their party numbers shrink.

  18. Your right, I misspoke. The VAST MAJORITY of democrats and republicans are against the legalization of MJ.

haha, delusions. Obama has it in his heart to do whatever his party tells him to do. If the democrats all suddenly agree that MJ is ok - you bet Obama will sign off on it. But the reality is both Dems and Reps aren't ready to accept MJ. They fear losing VOTES plain and simple. Their actual opinions on weed is not even part of the equation.

Very broad generalization at the same time does not acknowledge the stick up Dems ass about the same thing. Are you going to argue about which stick is bigger? Neither party is going to accept it so whats the point in calling out ONE of the parties?

  19. I think you'd be surprised to find out how many people in this country oppose legalization, how many support it, and how many don't care either way. But you may already have your head so far up the current president's ass to remember that the federal government has opposed legalization for the past 80 years, regardless of what political party was in executive power or not. Do you honestly believe legalization exists because of public opinion against it?!
