reptile calisand

Discussion in 'Coco Coir' started by thesage3, Sep 24, 2011.

  1. well been thinking about using calisand from the pet store for a cal and mag replacement for calmag. I guess what it really is is vita sand. which has calcium carbonate magnesium carbonate vitamin b and other stuff. I already mixed in some with coco about 2 tablespoons per gal and did some top dressing on some others. now before the critics come out this stuff is basically cleaned dolomite lime. anybody have any thoughts. and yes I'm sick of buying calmag.

  2. no input, but i am definitely interested in seeing what others have to say and what your findings are

  3. well so far so good no signs of def or tox what has me excited is the extra vitamin like b and c. I'll keep you posted

  4. well this stuff is working pretty good I transplanted some into treated coco and they are nice and green. and top dressed some too, I had 2 that I deliberately gave a mag def and the leafs have lost their inervein yellow and turned green again. I didn't do a side by side but it appears to be working better and faster than dolomite lime. the dolomite I had to grind to a flour to get it to work this fast.will keep u guys posted.

  5. this sh!t is the bomb I have not had calmag for weeks, the reptile sand is working.

  6. nice, got any pictures?

  7. what do you want pics of ? the sand or healthy plants?lol

  8. well i kinda know what you're talking about with the sand, but do you think brand might matter?
and i was gonna ask how you added it, but i reread the first post and you just mixed it in, so yea

  9. yea I mixed it in with fresh medium and the ones that where already planted I top dressed with about a tbl. the stuff is called vitasand i will check the brand later.

  10. the brand is zoo med and its called vita sand its kinda expensive about $15 but I think it will last just as long as a gal of calmag @$45.

  11. Hey sage! I'm new to coco an looking for tips/tricks like this one, heck I already grab my ph down from the pet store, why not this? Did you only top dress or have you tried a mix?

  12. both I mixed and then supplemented with top dress if needed. the only thing I,ve noticed is the mag carbonate is slow to get released, s a pinch of epsom everyother clears that up. i was going to try and grind it some how "to make more soluble" or try to dissolve in water to make on calmag solution with the extra epsom for more mag.

  13. update, things are still good but still adding a little epsom for mag

  14. Go get 'em Sage. Are you I bud yet?

  15. the reptile sand worked great i think its cal is more readily available then the mag so Epsom is required.
