Reminder: basic botany

  1. The (marijuana) leaf connects to the plant using a structure called a petiole.
The juncture of the petiole and the stem of the plant is called a leaf axil.
Small paired leafy structures at the sides of the leaf axil are called stipules, and make no indication of the gender of the plant. All adult leaves have stipules.
Also in the axil, between the stipules, will sprout a secondary branch, and possibly preflowers.
The preflowers that are balls indicate that the plant is male.
If there are two white threads instead of balls, the plant is female. Stipules shold not be mistaken for indications of females.

I don't profess to know about hermaphrodites.

Do a google image search and you'll find very good pictures for these structures.
