red/blue lighting

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by zonindallas, May 13, 2018.

  1. how essential is having red and blue wavelength lighting ; and, if essential at how many lumens. haven't seen or read much about this online, u-tube, etc. thanks, z

  2. Pretty essential. What are u thinking about? What kind of light to buy?

  3. kind and lumen output. does one need a special bulb that emits a certain red wavelength; or will any red colored bulb work. thanks

  4. All white lights also have red and blue in them in different amounts. If you google different light spectrums and their influence on plant growth you'll literally be overwhelmed with info and actual scientific studies.

White light is made up of all the colors of the rainbow including ultraviolet on the high frequency side and far red on the low frequency side.

The most influential color for plant growth by itself is red by far. You can't just have red though. The other spectrums positively influence the plant's structure. Red by itself causes too much stretch and poor root development. LED's for a long time ignored many of the other spectrums besides red and blue because those are the most important but white light leds that have been doing better in growing efficiency have proven to me that there's something to those middle other spectrums like green and you don't want to leave it out.

As far as using any red color bulb definitely not the spectrum ranges that work best in plants are very specific. That's why lights in only certain K ranges or spectrums blends work best for growing.

  5. thanks for response. you refreshed my memory that white light has all "three of the primary colors". but, not sure if "primary colors" equals "all spectrums" or not. probably not important for me (at least right now) as i'm a beginning grower and need to devote my time and $ to more urgent and necessary needs of my plants. and, probably why red and blue light isn't talked about much; but, lumens and heat control is. i'm just know learning about "k" (means degrees kalvin to me) i got a grow tent this past winter. i initionally used just cfl's; then upgraded and added led's. i bet i increased lumens tenfold. was at 24/7 for awhile then to 18/6. after the increase my plants took off like "rockets". they grew inches within days. i got curious about adding red lighting to flower space to increase bud growth. but, maybe that's not necessary; plus, the red led and red cfl put out about 100 lumens and 60 lumens respectively. i'm assuming not enough to have any effect.
