Recommended First Person Shooters?

  1. I haven't been in tune with the gaming community for some time now and I just bought a new laptop that will give me the opportunity to get back in touch with my inner geek! I installed Battlefield 2 yesterday but, as R_M mentioned in a former post, it was rather buggy and a situation arose where I needed to uninstall and exchange the laptop for a new one (Factory mishap with the LCD).

I really want to throw down a few bucks money on a decent FPS, as I don't have the monthly income to get involved in an MMORPG at the moment (Ex-FFXI smoker..I mean, player ;)).

    What do you guys reccomend?

By the way, here are the specs of my new toy:

    ASUS Gaming Series
Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.0 GHz
    2 GB RAM
    Nvidia GeForce GO 7700
160 GB Hard Drive, partitioned (I'm not worried about the limited capacity, I use an external for my movies and music)
Windows Vista (I'm not sold yet.. it's still pretty buggy. I might reformat and install my copy of XP Home if anything seriously irritates me)

I'll post some photos later on. It's pretty sexy.

    ;)

  2. Used to play CS alot... when steam came out it got kinda lame,

a Mod that i found amazing for it was Natural Selection. Basically an alien vs marine game that combines RTS games with FPS... Theres a commander on the marines that builds and gives commands to his team (from an overhead point of view on the map)

Kinda annoying though, in RTS you tella unit to do something and they do it.. players area little different.

I've been playin UT2k4 for a while on and off..

Quake 3 will never lose it's fun..

Doom 3 was amazing for a while, (the single player anyways, the multiplayer is crap)

  3. Nice, glad to see other gamers. Uhh I play FEAR (crazy intense), S.W.A.T (really cool game but not nice graphics), Half Life 2 if you havn't played it is great. HL2 Episode 1 is good too. Those are pretty much the ones I play, oh and Counter Strike online is always fun.

  4. I love to play BF2 online.

  5. me and my friends all play counter strike source....if you get it let me know...

  6. Oh yes, I played FEAR at a net cafe a few months ago. I really liked the single player action, so I might look into it.

BF2 is fun online.. I may reinstall it if I become extremely bored.

  7. Far Cry

I've played it through twice in a row, and I'm ready for a third. Like all my games it's pirated and I cannot wreak havoc in multiplayer, but I am considering buying a legitimate copy.

It runs great, the engine is comparable to source, the graphics are more than satisfying and the game play is fantastic.

The game play is very flexible. Multiple ways to accomplish one goal, similar to HL2.

If this game is any sign from of the quality of work from Crytek, then Crysis should be incredible.

The plot is cheesy as hell, that's the only downside.

  8. I really liked F.E.A.R.
A buddy of mine and I were playing it at the same time, I tried to anticipate some of the scenarios I'd seen him handle, and the NPC's acted totally different with me. AI with serious contingency.

    HL2 was good as well.

The game I'm playing now is freaky. Condemned - Criminal Origins, lots of melee weapons and you use a flashlight almost the whole way through. Getting really high nad playing that game has seriously scared the shit outa me a few times, it's got a great style.

I think I might look for a cheap copy of Far Cry after Rasta's recommendation.

  9. nice, i found a few new games to online steal

  10. SWAT 4 is hands down my favorite PC FPS of all time. Its graphics arent great, but the single and multiplayer modes are fantastic. It never really got bugged down with assholes like most multiplayer games do.

  11. Doom II

It's a classic and definitely worth your time.

  12. gears of war is awesome

  13. Thats a TPS

  14. Heh. I grew up on Doom 2. My dad taught me all of the cheats when I was two. I beat single player at three. I stopped playing it at ten. I might download it later on, now that I think about it. It's freeware at this point, so there's no need to torrent it.

Though, my absolute favorite retro game of all time has to be Jazz Jackrabbit.

  15. Hmm.. those comp specs aren't that great... the mobile GPU chips suck still these days unless you pay out the nose for something decent... a full 7700 isn't even that great as it has limited pipelines...

and the intel core duo is good, but not much makes use of it, and as it's only a 2ghz that's not optimal either these days..

Having said that, you could still play some nice games with the gfx tweaked like mad.

FEAR is good... nice graphics, decent load time, lots of fun online.. Multiplayer version is freeware from www.joinfear.com

BF2 is fun, but buggy as hell, and has lots of idiots on the servers (maybe less these days, it's been 5-6mo since i last played)
    [edit]
Forgot to mention, there's a few mods worth checking out:
    - Project reality... this one is awesome; it made my heart race the first few times i played it as it felt so real (minus any real kickback :))
    - Nations at War.. another good one, some nice air-support
    - Desert Combat... this one just came out, but i've been waiting for it... fuck.. now i think i have to re-install bf2
    [/edit]

i've been really indulged with linux lately, and have found a few decent freeware FPS'... If i'm not mistaken, they have Windows counterparts they offer as well

    Sauerbraten: http://sauerbraten.org/
Looks pretty nice, especially for a freeware.. In-game map editors; quake-like play, real fast paced... Engine written from scratch, and impressive at least compared to the commercial engines out there.

    Nexuis: http://www.alientrap.org/nexuiz/
Even better looking than Sauerbraten; with a good gfx card you can really enjoy this one.. I think this is a revamp of the Q1 source-code that was released a few years back.

  16. BAttlefield 2 Special Forces online is my favorite!!! I might upgrade to the new 2142 when i get some time to play... I also used to play Doom3 with all the lights off and surroud sound on... it's freaky to play high... scariest game ever!!!

  17. I loved Delta Force: Black Hawk Down when I was younger, about 3 years ago. Its really fun online.

  18. Unreal Tournament and Unreal Championship are both pretty fun

  19. My favorite FPS of all time is Return To Castle Wolfenstein. And on the setup
you've got there you should get decent frame rates.
