Hiphop is a culture rap is it's music edit: but some will say rap is the mainstream guys like Wayne and gucci who only talk about money violence and women and that hiphop is more intellectual, lyrical, and real, guys like KRS and Nas
rap is something you do.. hip-hop is something you live [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tUaGFI2m5Y]YouTube - KRS gives 9 elements of Hip Hop at Harvard[/ame]
and yes - both the other answers in this thread are true. but the thing is.. 'hip-hop music' vs 'rap music' is another story. somehow the two have emerged as different genres. that's what i was referring to when i said the boundaries are debatable.
Ive studied this...Hip hop is more of a lifestyle and consists of four main components 1) dj'ing (which me and my brother do) 2) Graffiti 3) Breakdancing (which I do) 4) Rap or mc'ing (generally when it has meanings and messages so in a sense rap is a part of hip hop and its culture..hope this helped

It is all apart of the hip hop culture. I guess you could say there is a difference between rap music and hip hop music. Rap music= Lil wayne, Gucci Mane, Soulja Boy, Young Jeezy, Waka Flocka Flame, etc. Hip Hop= Rakim, KRS-One, P.O.S.,Murs, Atmosphere, The Wu Tang. I will admit that some artist in "Rap music" have a good beat or two and maybe a clever rhyme, but every time I have tried to get into that style I get sick of it after a week so I stick with hip hop music.
It has nothing to do with mainstream vs. underground. I consider "rap" more of an obnoxious, I'm better than you, style. I would consider Big L & Wu-Tang more rap. But still, the aforementioned at least had some type of message in most of their songs. Today's mainstream has exploited the money, cars, and insults, and turned it into a whole sub-genre. I agree with this guy. Today's mainstream has pretty much stuck with the I'm better than you style and completely removed the message part.
rap is music hip hop the culture... which means krs-on lil wayne, nas, gucci mane are all rap music whether they have a message or not..
