R&B is, frankly, a useless term. It's been used for most of the 20th century to refer to most kinds of music made primarily by and for African-Americans, including acoustic and electric blues, funk, soul, gospel, swinging types of jazz, you name it. It was probably devised by some white music exec who didn't know or care enough to discover the differences between the different styles.
While that's very true, I believe the OP is referring to what is known as "contemporary R&B". It's one of the many styles of music that are often claimed to be deceased (hip-hop, rock, disco) but still thrive under the direction of dope cats with large brain penises. tl;dr: insight - yes, OP - no
