The plants root it the same length underground as the plant is high above the ground ! You should re-pot the pot when the plant gets to the same height as the container that it's in. As the plant grows it develops a root ball and the roots can all be contained within a pot. But if the plant was planted directly into the ground it would develop a very long root.
