In your design do you have a smaller hole leading from the bowl to the stem? I think the easiest wood pipe to make would be a chillum with no carb. Even better, just make it from bamboo if that's accessible.

Bamboo really is awesome. I was on a work trip out of state clearing out this house and brought some herb but no pipe. The property had tons of bamboo all over, so I hacked off an 8" section with only 1 node, poked through the node with a screw, seasoned it a tiny bit and started smoking.
