Questions on making Cannabis Gummy's

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by Jon23, Jun 3, 2019.

  1. It's gonna be a little while before i make any gummy's or tinctures but thought i might as well read up on it and learn for when its time. I watched a few Youtube videos which say different things and they never tell you how to make the infused Coconut oil or tincture which i guess you could you vegetable glycerin tinctures for gummy's right?
For me Coconut oil for Gummy's would taste weird i always thought Glycerin was the way to go but, that's just me. I do like the site Leafly.com ,but for recipes they are kinda confusing. Recipe: How to Make Cannabis-Infused Gummy Bears Says to use 1oz CBD tincture. Now i'm guessing it don't have to be CBD focused and do they mean 1OZ of Coconut oil or Glycerin, this would also be a tincture correct?
Also making the infused oil Cannabis and Coconut Oil: Uses, Benefits, and a Recipe to Make Your Own it says one cup of cannabis flower, how much is a cup, like how many grams? i think when i read up on making tinctures before most people use 1 oz of flower. What is usually the amount used for making tinctures? I need a better recipe.

  2. I wish I could help; I've done a handful of gummy runs and they have all turned out decent and none amazing.
I'm going to call upon @Wake'n Bakester to try and answer some of your questions.

  3. Honestly mate I've looked far and wide and every measurement it different.

The best way would be to measure the THC concentration of your bud, then that will give you an idea of how much you will need per pound of oil/butter whatever.

When I made my brownies I used a half ounce of bud to 500g of butter, and put it in the slow cooker for 4 hours. I lost about 200g of butter in the process, so I made some very expensive brownies.

They were deadly though, they knocked daily smokers on their ass for HOURS.

The first gummies I made using coconut oil came out fine, but I keep searching for simpler ways..You will not taste coconut...I would try your first batch by only pouring into a glass dish and then cutting squares, just to see if you have good results. With success from there, move on to smaller molds.

My oil is always 1 ounce (28g) of decarb to 1 pound of oil. I stopped using butter many years ago, but 1 pound of butter is 4 sticks (113g each) and also a stick is 1/2 cup measure So I place roughly 460g of coconut oil in with 28g pot per batch of extraction. My edibles are all based on using 1/2 cup per recipe. Stay consistent no matter your method. I don't have access to potency values, so this is just one thing I can control to help guide me with each different batch of oil made. I don't like to shock and drop my friends with high dose stuff, and have heard many sad stories of racing hearts and all day zone outs. We want to enjoy delicious and satisfying edibles without having them make us sick with regret.

Before attempting gummies I followed a bunch of youtube videos and they are all ovr the place, but most are not shelf stable....I then wrote out a guideline based off of all my notes and made a small 1/2 batch using 1/4 cup of my oil. I was surprised they did so well. I wrote down that recipe and kept reading more about gelled candies, but oil isn't a common ingredient in any of them. I got a 2nd batch made this way, but I wasn't keen on some aspects and I ran across a truer candy making recipe for gummies...I thought it could be the holy grail...ugh

This was a bigger batch slightly altered mess with 1/2 cup of oil, and additional clear candy combination that I followed from Diamond Delight Edibles, but I had to remelt everything and remold because my guar emulsifier did not keep the oil from separating and though the oil was sort of encapsulated within a frothy gel substance, it was it's own layer. un-molding this stuff just to fix the mess is no fun, and the 2nd molding I forgot to spray 2 of my molds and they just stuck. I had to dig out what I could and remelt! That’s the gummy in my profile pic.. My liquid lecithin also separated out into a blob and I had to strain it out. I was able to make 3 successful batches using oil, but I knew there had to be an easier way.

Basically, I learned to never boil gelatine. It froths up and creates an ugly scum layer. Some people will show them pouring this broken gel into a tall glass letting it set, then removing this scum and slow melting the remainder to have clear gel again. In my one experience, my canna oil was trapped in that bubbly scum...do not boil or stir vigorously and it will not show up to ruin your day. Diamond Delight uses a stick blender which incorporates air and bubbles, which is not ideal for gelled candies....
Bloom your gelatine in a small amount of cold liquid 1st, and then it melts readily in hot water... don't stir it into a continuously boiling pot of water, or you will get scum.

Oil and water do not readily mix, which brought me here to Sam's tutorial making an alcohol tincture and not an oil extraction. I made my tincture, then turned it into a honey elixer. There's the answer I wanted. I made a simple Jigglers Recipe last week with it, but my dosing was off, so I remelted added more honey and got a good refrigerator product. Thick, chewy gelled whammy. Is it a gummy? No, it isn't shelf stable, but I do plan to make a batch and I will report back. I will say It is not at the top of my list, but I hope I will not be using canna oil for gummies ever again! Basically I determined the use of Karo syrup mixed in with the honey elixir as seen here is going to be the most successful:

This is the same time tested recipe I've used for my medical issue for years now. Simple and very strong start with 1 drop and wait 2 hours before taking more.

  6. I recently made gummies and just bought a tincture made from oil. I would recommend using an alcohol based tincture because oil is not water soluble. Unless you use lecithin (helps the oil and water to not separate) like i saw an above posted recipe. Next time around and when making my own tinctures i will definitely lean towards an alcohol infusion for simplicity of use when making edibles
