ok im sorta a newbie at this so i will probally get laughed at for these questions.. haha but i just wanted 2 know..because my curiousity is killing me... okay ive been looking at pictures n reading here n there .. and there is stuff i dont understand ... 1) i have some plants in soil about like 5 inch's tall, anyway i could transplant them into a hydro thing?... im new to the hydro thing, so could i do it like, i take a fish tank and put some air things on the bottom 2 keep steady air flow, and take this styrofoam and make it float the plant on it...now how do i transplant the plants i got n soil to hydro, and the things with the roots, how do i do that, i havnt seen anything really give good description how to do it, im just really curious on how its done,...how do you get the roots to go down there, and whats the odds of my plants living...... plz give me some feedbak haha
i dont think you could successfully float a plant all the way to harvest time. I've seen people use those big rubbermaid tubs. They cut holes in the lid, then stick the plant in the hole and wrap tape around the stem to keep it in place. Either they wrap the tape loosely so that it gives as the stem grows wider, or they just cut away and adjust the tape as the grow progresses. That might work if you have an aquarium you're set on using. And about roots - they will keep growing downwards until they find water (or until the plant dies).
From what I've read transplanting from soil to hydro doesn't work...it stresses the plant too much. However, transplanting from hydro to soil would work. Here is a link to og's growfaq on this topic. http://www.overgrow.com/growfaq/63
read my first hydro journal...it should give you a better understanding.. http://forum.grasscity.com/showthread.php?t=45857&highlight=hydro+grow+canna
