Hello fellow blades, I hope all is well here in the city on this lovely Sunday morning. I am here today seeking help with making my first batch of cannabutter. I usually buy my edibles from my caregiver 3 for $10. I am not sure what his ratio is when he makes them (someone does it for him) but I do know that he only uses his trimmings and tiny stray buds from his plants. The brownies are bite size about 1" x 1" x .5" and 2 of them more than do the trick. Problem is I know a LOT of patients and am starting to get into care giving myself and want to be able to have these tasty magical brownies on hand at all times. I am shooting for a very similar product since people are always asking me for them.

I have been doing lots of research and searching here on the city but am still coming up with a couple of questions. Now I decided to use middies/reg with my brownies since I have cooked with them before and had good results and they are obviously cheaper. I haven't actually smoked the buds since I always have something very tasty on hand but they don't seem too bad, definitely the kind of middies i used to smoke all the time back in the day. I have read that a good ratio to use is 7 grams of chronic for one stick of butter, would I want to use twice as much reg for this and go with a half oz per stick? My original plan was to use an entire QP (4 oz) for a lb of butter (4 sticks) but now it seems like over kill to me. I don't really want to waste herb if I don't have to you know.

Also I plan on making it in a crock pot over a 24 hour period on the 'keep warm' setting. And here is a picture of the bud I plan on using, I have a lot of it on hand so don't be afraid to throw some numbers out there for making some truly potent butter. Thanks!

  2. The key to getting consistent bite sized units is the weed to unit ratio not weed to butter.

Figure out what amount of butter the recipie you are using calls for.
Figure out how many brownies/cookies/etc you get from this recipie.
Now Put @ least 1 gram of decent mids per unit into the amount of butter called for by the recipie.

Example. A store bought cookie mix makes 12 large cookies calling for 1 stick of butter. So in this case @ least 12 grams of decent mids to that one stick of butter.

Example 2 A Homemade brownie recipie uses 1-1/2 sticks of butter and yields 24 brownies. You put put at least 24 grams of decent mids in that 1-1/2 stick of butter.

This is the key to consistency. As you can imagine it helps to find things to make that use MORE butter. If it comes down to not being able to fit the amount of herb into the butter then use the water method. I use 1 gram as a starting point. I prefer closer to 2 if I have it :)

  3. Thanks man, that makes a lot more sense to me, I was kind of trying to figure that out in the long run but doing it completely ass backwards. I think what I am going to do is use this recipe Cocoa Brownies Recipe : Alton Brown : Food Network. It calls for 2 sticks of butter which i will infuse 2oz into the butter and then make them into 120 bite size pieces. 3 would = 1.4 grams.

  4. Sounds reasonable. Alton Brown is the Shiznit.
Seems like a small cut to get 120, an 8x8 pan at 1 inch squares would only be 64.

I might have to do a double batch with one ounce each to be able to have enough batter for 120 decent bite size pieces. I am grinding up 2 ounces of these mids and getting ready for the crock pot. Pretty happy to find that there is not very many seeds. I will keep you guys posted on how it is coming along. I am going to make a test batch of these brownies tonight to see what a single batch yields and go from there. Can never have too many baked goods in a blades home I suppose.

Yea Alton is pretty much mack daddy, I was pretty happy to see the recipe called for 2 sticks butter. Anyways I will take pictures throughout the process the next couple of days and let you all know how it is coming along.

    Here it is brewing.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to this I have been very busy the past couple of days. Not that anybody was really even reading this ha ha ha. Anyways just to humor myself here is the rest of the pictures from my first time making cannabutter.

The pictures are pretty self explanatory. The 3rd picture is stick of cannabutter that was left over from the mixture.

Now everything went okay in the process and the cannabutter turned out great, 2 brownies gives you a pretty intense giggly body high that takes you to the moon if you smoke a small bowl once it starts kicking in. 3 of them had me taking 5 hour naps, I tried 3 twice yesterday and ended up falling asleep both times it is crazy.

My only concern is that i lost quite a bit of butter doing this, I ended up losing a whole stick of butter out of 4 sticks. I am pretty sure I know what the problem was, when I was letting the butter harden in the fridge I got a little antsy and I think i drained the water a bit too early as the butter was a bit mushy in spots, I believe that not all the butter had hardened and a good amount of it ran off in the water that was drained. I realize that you won't be able to retrieve all butter but this just seems like it was a bit more than what should have been lost in the process. Any ideas or pointers on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  9. Well you probably jumped the gun.. Also during the squeezing stage you can loose some there.... Squeeze the shit out of it.

I let mine harden till it is tottally hard @least 6 hrs in fridge. Also I find letting it cool to room temp before putting it in fridge results in less loss..

i usually only loose a tsp or two per stick.

    Good work!! :)

  10. Yea I figured that was what was wrong, I noticed lots of lipids washing down the sink, I'm just such an impulsive person. Lessons learned, I've got plenty of batches ahead to learn from. Couple tsps per stick sounds a lot better! I will hopefully shoot for that next time. What method do you use for making your butter and how much do you make with how much bud? Haha, lots of questions.

  11. I put 24grams per 1 stick and make those betty crocker cookie mixes allot 12 mid-size cookies, each with 2 grams so you could split one with a friend or go all out.

I do water/herb/butter in a regular or crock pot.

  12. I always recommend people save the processing water.

Even when the butter is completely solid there are many free-floating oily cannabinoids still within the remaining liquid. In butters that were inadequately heated/processed, I've seen people pour off huge amounts of loose kief/hash right down the drain. That you over-cooked yours may have spared you :) Much like you notice when making bubble hash, glandular material sinks, so you end up with a solidified canna oil, and a oily canna water below. If the recipe you are currently making doesn't require water or additional liquid, simply freeze it, and use it once you're following a recipe that needs it :)
