Questions for Liberals...

Discussion in 'Politics' started by 420volfan, Dec 25, 2012.

  1. 1. How can you justify the current tax rate on the top 1%. (Currently 60%)

    2. How can you justify the welfare state.

    3. Should people on welfare (under 50) have any civic duties to their taxpayer financed pay check? Picking up littler ect.

    4. What should be a reasonable excuse to get disability? Depression... Really?

5 Shouldn't there be a limit on how long one should be able to stay on unemployment?

    6. Why should the government and federal reserve force companies to give low interest rates, and make risky loans to people who can't afford them, and put us all in this recession.

    7. How can you STILL say the Democratic Party isn't a war party after Libya, Africa, and now the sure bet of a war with Iran?

  2. I am makeing popcorn this should be good.

  3. Cuz guns...

  4. One of the known liberals will come in and make a post adressing only one(or only half of one even) question and will thoroughly derail the rest of the thread. This is my prediction.

  5. I think they'll just pose questions to conservatives instead of answering.

    3. Should people on welfare (under 50) have any civic duties to their taxpayer financed pay check? Picking up littler ect.

NO, they get money because of hardships or misfortune. There's no reason they should have to jump through additional hoops to get help.

    4. What should be a reasonable excuse to get disability? Depression... Really?

I don't think most people, including myself, are qualified to make this assessment. It's easy to say that depression isn't a real disability until you are forced to work 40 hours a week while clinically depressed.

5 Shouldn't there be a limit on how long one should be able to stay on unemployment?

Yes, depending on the availability of jobs.

    6. Why should the government and federal reserve force companies to give low interest rates, and make risky loans to people who can't afford them, and put us all in this recession.

Risky loans are never a good idea and I wouldn't support such a policy but sometimes the private sector shares in the responsibility for things like this and predatory lending.

    7. How can you STILL say the Democratic Party isn't a war party after Libya, Africa, and now the sure bet of a war with Iran?

There are obviously Neo Cons in both major parties but I still believe the GOP is far more hawkish and dangerous when it comes to starting major conflicts. I doubt Obama will invade Iran since it's a major commitment and hopefully we can exit Afghanistan in the next 2 years.

Why Norway is a BS argument for higher taxes

Agreed, eliminating social security nets isn't my number one priority, and while I don't think it's necessarily right for my money to be taken from me I'd much rather it be given to those enduring real hardship. Compared to the assholes who sit on unemployment for 99 weeks and then find a job. Keeping the military industrial complex in check is more important, imo.

There's varying degrees of mental illness, and if someone is just stuck in a rut for a month or two I don't think they should qualify, but not everything is black and white.

It should definitely be a lot less than 99 weeks, people can sit and collect a check for almost 2 years while not looking for a job, that's unreasonable.

I'm not a liberal but I had to respond to that article you posted. I more or less agree with all your other responses.

Why Norway is a BS argument for higher taxes

  9. 1. How can you justify the current tax rate on the top 1%. (Currently 60%)

fuck em. doesnt have much of an effect on the economy, as some libertarians pointed out - its not even that much extra dough.
    so why not.

    2. How can you justify the welfare state.

people have not been givin equal opportunities in crony capitalism.

    3. Should people on welfare (under 50) have any civic duties to their taxpayer financed pay check? Picking up littler ect.

    would be nice.

    4. What should be a reasonable excuse to get disability? Depression... Really?

extreme depression sure. my mom is on disability, she has MS, and we dont know what we would do as a family without that disability check coming in for her.

5 Shouldn't there be a limit on how long one should be able to stay on unemployment?

yes. i know a guy who was trying to get fired from his job so he could get on unemployment. But the dude honestly deserves it, for his sense of humor.

    6. Why should the government and federal reserve force companies to give low interest rates, and make risky loans to people who can't afford them, and put us all in this recession.

those low interest loans are probably the only thing keeping the economy from a complete collapse.

    7. How can you STILL say the Democratic Party isn't a war party after Libya, Africa, and now the sure bet of a war with Iran?

democrat party is a war party. I dont see anything wrong with helping out militarily every now and then, it just has to be fair and not just for there resources.

how many millionaires were polled for this? I didn't see that in the article..

it just says "68% of millionaires (those with investments of $1 million or more)"
did they actually ask and get an answer from all of them?

also.. those with investments of $1mil or more doesn't mean that they make $1 million per year in taxable income.

someone who makes 75k per year could have $1mil in investments and their tax rate wouldn't be effected because they make $75k

  11. Anyone is free to write a personal check to the IRS at anytime. They can tax themselves at that rate if they so choose.

  12. On its own, this doesn't refute anything stated in the article. Do you understand how class systems work and what social mobility is? Do you understand what was meant by the term "peers"?

See above. What's wrong with people wanting to become wealthier by increasing their contribution society in exchange for financial gain?

  13. I'd love to see a source for this...

  14. Working a job is not the only way to contribute to society and some would argue that a LOT of jobs don't actually benefit society at all. One could argue that with the consumer type society prevalent in the U.S., a larger economy (i.e. more goods and services) doesn't actually raise the standard of living.

Here is an excerpt from a book I recently read. Bit long but worth the read.

This also doesn't address what I wrote. Consumers are necessary in practically any economy.

Whoever wrote that excerpt clearly has little to no understanding of economics, which isn't surprising given your demonstrable (lack of) understanding of economics. I'd address the statements, but it'd take longer for me to do that than it took for you to post & read it, so I'll pass. You're not that important.

  16. Lol at the ad hominems. If you don't want to have a discussion/debate thats def fine. No ones forcing you.

The person was not saying that consuming is a bad thing but rather over- consuming.

  17. Agreed.

  18. I don't want to respond to your paragraph that took you 30 seconds to copy & paste since it could easily take 20+ minutes to go through all of the author's incorrect assumptions and then demonstrate why when we break down their false premises that they've built up over a lifetime, all of their conclusions are either wrong or not necessarily true.

Thanks for that, but I never said that the author said consuming was bad. Try re-reading what I wrote.

Actually I typed that up myself. I took some time responding to your opinions about my opinions and then you decided to say the conversation was not worth your time. Doesn't bother me if you don't want to give any reasoning behind your opinions though. No ones forcing you...:smoking:

  20. Why did you spend the last two posts posting about how you don't have the time to respond to his posts that aren't worth responding to?

    Perplexing.
