Questions - first grow

Discussion in 'Grow Room Design/Setup' started by reGcity, Oct 12, 2010.

  1. I'm looking to grow 4-5 plants (seed to harvest) going to go with a 4x4 grow tent (still considering DIY cabinet) Will this tent below and light system be enough? Please let me know if the space too big or too small. I have some extra cash to make these purchases.

Amazon.com: 400 Watt Electronic Switchable Ballast Hydroponic Grow Lamp System with Metal Halide and High Pressure Sodium HPS Light Bulbs, Cord + Hanger, GYO2002: Patio, Lawn & Garden

And I'm confused about what kind of nutes I should feed the plants. If someone can refer me to a thread with this valuable information or answer it for me, I'd highly appreciate it.

  2. get the tent...

the purchase seems solid.... just wonder if you should have an air cooled hood

and you forgot to mention soil or hydro

  3. The good: This is the cheapest full system setup you can get for $150.

The bad: The hangers work on a spring loaded tension type system, the problem I had was that one of the hangers pulled the hood up farther than the other one. So the level of the hood was off by like 45 degrees. I tried to adjust the tension but they were already at the lightest setting. So I had to lay a crescent wrench on one side to distribute the weight of the hood evenly. Also, the mh and hps bulbs are on the low quality side and produce quite a bit of heat and use a little bit more electricity than quality, more expensive bulbs. I have a small 2X4 grow tent and the temps reached up to 92 deg. I even had one fan blowing directly on it, and another oscillating with the tent completely open and temps were still unmanageable. So then I put two 265cfm squirrel cage fans in the tent, one for intake and one for exhaust, and still temps reached 88 deg.

The design flaw in this system: The hood. If you don't have an open space with adequate ventilation, then you might have to invest in a ported hood like I did. I had to get a 6" ported sunsystems hood and hook up a fan to it, now temps never get above 78 deg... perfect.

To recap- I'd recommend this product to anyone on a low budget. But beware, you'd better have an open, well ventilated space, or invest in some fans and a new hood if you want to manage temps. I WOULDN'T recommend this to anyone who plans to use this in a grow tent, unless you have some kickazz ventilation or unless you want to blast the AC. But it'd be more practical to buy a better system with a ported hood.

    Well that's my 2 cents.

you should read the reviews... copied and pasted... for 150 you get what you pay for i guess

I really appreciate the quick response. If I forgot to mention, I'm not on a small budget. I have some extra cash I can invest. If there is a better lighting system/tent you can recommend it would be also highly appreciated. I just dont want to waste money on useless products, then end up buying more crap. Would you recommend building my own box? and if anyone can answer the questions on the nutes.

  5. go with fox farm for nutes and soil.

get the tent the bigger the better.

but get a vented hood, its usually like 50-60 bucks more from hightechgarden supply.

a 400w that radiates heat will burn your house down haha.
