Question regarding electricity

Discussion in 'Grow Room Design/Setup' started by Buddy Burns, Jan 28, 2011.

  1. I would like to make a grow room in my new house that I bought. I want to run 2x 1000w HPS in the flowering chamber and about 200-400w worth of flouros in the veg chamber. Also plan on having the 2 1000w HPS's air cooled. I am skilled in carpentry and would build a stealth room on my own, very nicely hidden and disguised behind a fake shelving unit (hidden passage).

I have no idea what to do about the electric side of things. My last grow was only 400w HPS throughout and I didn't really have a need for anything besides a regular wall socket. I have a good friend who is an electrician, but I do not want to tell anybody about this operation. How what could I tell him as a lie? Or even, is this a project that I could complete myself after learning to do this thru good reads and info on the net?

Also, what work EXACTLY would I need to have done in this hidden room, which will have no electricity at all to begin with?

  2. Assuming you don't intend to add more gear later; You need a new 30 amp breaker installed in your panel, #12 wire if the circuit length doesn't exceed 60 feet (#10 wire for longer circuits), enough wall boxes to accommodate the number of outlets you want, the number of 15a duplex outlets you need, and water resistant faceplates. If you are not installing the electrical into the wall and intend to surface mount it, you will need enough 1/2 conduit and connectors to make the distance. As for installing it all, electrical outlets and wires of the types listed above are very easy to do; just google it, only you can determine if you're up to it. Just remember, never connect the lead wires for the new circuit to the breaker panel until after you finish the outlet installations.

  3. +rep... no doubt I'm up for it... just want to make sure it's easy enough before I go and burn my house down lol

  4. It's very easy. You only have three wires to deal with. Black is positive and goes from the breaker to the positive (brass) lug on the outlet, white is neutral and goes from the panel grounding lug (at the bottom of panel, you will notice where all the white wires are screwed in) to the the neutral (silver) lug on the outlet, unsheathed copper is ground and runs from grounding screw to grounding screw. Check google for schematics. Breakers just push/snap into most panels made after 1980. The hardest part is usually running the lead wire from the panel to the room you are installing in. If you run it over the trusses in your attic, you're miles ahead of the game if you install it in conduit instead of leaving it exposed.

  5. sorry cant help on the electricity side.. i would love to see a layout/plans of your hidden room thou.
