Question on ballasts

  1. I am wondering where I could get aluminum enclosures like the ones they use for professionally made ballasts. I personally think it is insane the prices some people pay for ballasts when wiring up one is very simple. The only problem I have run into is something to put the ballasts in. They usually get mounted onto a piece of wood and set high somewhere, however I want to be able to set them on a shelf. So I was wondering if anyone knew of possibilities to get this type of aluminum box to hold a ballast? Thanks.

  2. i am just curious what you think the total cost would be if you are building your own ballast? I know myself i would not mess with any electrical parts that also have electronics and carry high voltage.... Not everyone knows electrical stuff but i would be interested in seeing how "simple" this is.

i got my first 400watt ballast, hood, and bulb for $110-

i am still using the same one to this day.

  3. damn, where did you get that deal?

  4. Craigslist my friend...Craigslist

I always make sure i call the person to talk to them first...make sure they sound like a normal person...then i ask a few questions about the product before going to look at it.

I have found Hydrofarm Air Cooled Reflectors for $25-US

  5. haha ..also HTG supply is good for budget equipment but mostly lower grade products.

in other words do some looking around your towns Craigslist and Google anything you find to look at actual prices new...also make sure to check anything before buying to make sure it works.

  6. The first ballast I built, I wired it up in a metal tool box. just drilled a few 5/32" holes in the sides for ventilation.
