What do you guys think? Should I risk it?

To me it seems like maybe a 5% chance that a small firm would hire a summer intern, bring him in on the first day, make him take a drug test that he didn't know about and fail, then be forced to find another intern on such short notice. Seems like a waste of time and money. But hey, I don't know how it works.

Has anybody had a similar experience?

  2. In my experience employment based on pre employment drug screening is dependant on a negative result, if you have a starting date then I'd say you are most likely correct. I don't know it's worth the risk but usually companies who test, test before they extend the offer. Have you signed anything yet, if not they could still ask. If you know anyone else there that is cool, maybe try and prod and ask if they DT.

Also go back to the posting for the internship, I'm pretty certain it's mandatory that it's stated that they require pre-employment background/drug testing. Also check other positions they are hiring for see if you see anything about pre employment screening. It's usually on the bottom after the "Experience Required" section.

Thanks for the reply. The only form I've signed is the official offer letter. I have an official starting date and that is all.
