question about prayer?

Discussion in 'Religion, Beliefs and Spirituality' started by dewdad, Feb 9, 2011.

  1. Hey gc i have a question about prayer for you all. Is it wrong to mainly pray to ask God for something? Obviously give thanks and praise in the prayer as well, but for the reason you pray to be to ask for something? I hope you understand what I'm saying because I cant seem to find the right words.
    What do you think?

  2. "Ask and ye shall receive."

    lol

If god truly loves you then I dont see the problem. Im sure an xbox 360 is nothing to him

  3. Obviously you can pray for whatever you want to pray for but....
from what I learned, God isn't there to deliver answers to prayers for people praying for anything materialistic or monetary.

Prayer is meant for spiritual strength, for one's health, peace of mind, forgiveness, to help someone else or lookout for them or you, to send a sign of being on the right path or help getting there things like this.

    Hope this helps:smoke:

  4. "The secret to praying is simply praying" - Tozer

Remember to always make it known to God that you want His will to be done, not yours. Just praise God bro, it's all about the love.

  5. If you're spiritual or religious, I think the most meaningful prayer you can do is in your actions.

Talking to god is like telling him things he already knows.

  6. When I pray to "God" I just ask it to protect my loved ones, give us strength to continue through Life, throwing me a sign for a woman (queen) would be nice too.

Now when my house was in foreclosure, I prayed for it to be sold, once of the first times I've prayed in years, talking 12+ and the next day the house sold. Since then I been prayer almost every night...

  7. go ahead and ask for something for yourself, but there's millions of africans starving praying to god for food each day, not much is coming of it

  8. Well, I mean they are trying to telepathically communicate to the big man in the sky...come on now.

  9. Damn...god is like Satan then. I dont want any part of it.

  10. Depends on what you're asking for. Jesus was talking more about spiritual insight that you will recieve, he was quite blatantly opposed to material wealth. So, it's highly doubtful God will magically give you an XBox. For those, I would start searching in a Best Buy. ;)

"You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes, you just might find
    You get what you need."

    Great points.

"Your Father knows what you need before you ask him."

  11. Thanks for the replies. I should've said that when asking for things, I was talking more about good health or for a bad situation to work out, not material goods

  12. ^Yeah, I would think so.

"Faith, Hope, and Love, but the greatest of these is Love"

I can't imagine why any loving and compassionate being would not at least want to answer such prayers. But there is only so much that can be done without violating free will, so don't get too down when people persist in suffering and creating conflict. It is their choice (in that they do not believe they can choose happiness.)

  13. how about instead of praying for good health or for a bad situation to work itself out, you try praying that G-d will help give you the means to get your health in order, and will help give you the clarity of mind needed to figure out your problems

in judaism, at least, prayer is a meditative technique meant to still the mind and calm the soul. it is meant to align our will with the will of the Creator. in hebrew prayer is called tefilah, and tefilah comes from the root word pellel, which means self judgment. prayer is the mind and heart turning to the still areas of the mind, as a way of working out our problems through the clarity that comes from meditation.

prayer is a conversation between our body and soul, and between our soul and that spark of G-d that is within all of us. once you see that prayer is so much more than an opportunity to ask G-d for things, it opens up a whole world of possibilities

  14. Prayer isnt going to get you an Xbox or anything First of all, When you pray to Jah, give thanks and praise and ask for strength and happiness, not material wealth. You can pray about anything, but It doesnt mean you will get it. Prayer should come from the soul not the mind, But in the end, Just Love and you will be happy! Jah Bless:smoke:

  15. depends the motive behind it. And if you never pray but then one day you want an xbox and just say " GOD I WANT AN XBOX" everyday for a year... no. The reason your praying is not to get to know God and its for a personal motive. You gotta have faith.. even if you are a strong christian pray everyday for life, believe, yadda yadda yadda and one day just pray for a million dollars your not going to get it...

Now obviously this is my take on it, but I've taken religion all through grade schook (kindergarden till 12) and am a practicing ukrainian cahtolic..

    Pce bruddah :D

  16. Ask for them, but I honestly don't think god really is going to take that into account.

Show him you want these things by trying to better yourself and becoming a better person.

Asking him for good health isn't going to fix health problems man, I don't think so. Too many people in the world dying who pray to him every minute they have a chance.

You have to carve your own fate, if you believe in god, fine, but he isn't going to bail you out on anything. You can look to him for support, but in the end I personally don't believe you'll get these things. If god exists, he wants you to take the things that come at you in your life and make the best of them.

Simply put: Good people get cancer, it's what they do with it that separates the boys and girls from the true men and women. God isn't gonna bail any of them out. I believe he will let natural life take its course.

  17. Interesting thought. If He is all-knowing then what kind of conversation goes on between the body, soul, and the spark?

Prayer is not a formula. It should be something that comes naturally to you.

I believe it's wrong to only pray for ourselves receiving things because it shows selfish ambition.

When you pray to God, don't expect Him to give you whatever you pray for. Humble yourself and know that whatever the answer happens to be (you get that job you've been praying for or you get denied that job), it is the right answer and best for your life. He knows what you're going through. Prayer is not to get things, it's really to strengthen your trust and relationship with God.

Also, if you're praying for just material things (like a car, or phone) and not people, yourself (as in bettering your character), etc. you should really re-evaluate your relationship with God. What do you value most? God or the finite, material possessions that bring your brain temporary novelty?

    Hope this helps brotha

  19. prayer is less for Him, and more for us.

like i said, at least in judaism, its seen as a meditative technique. its a way to flush our minds of thinking about the past and future, and to just be present in the current moment. thats the best way to solve our problems, and its when the shekinah (holy spirit) is most able to speak to us. its more about listening for that "still, small voice" as a means to solve our own problems and to make our own desires emerge in the real world.

the set prayers that us jews recite multiple times a day are about praising G-d. our personal prayers are a means of forcing the ego to step aside and to just be present in the moment. its in that stillness that the most personal work can be done

  20. That makes sense. I think it also helps to know that He has a plan for us and a reason for everything He does. We just need to trust him that things will work out for the best
