Question about brownie portions!

  1. Okay, so everyone always refers to trying 'half a brownie' or 'only one brownie' when they discuss potency when you haven't eaten them yet. The thing is, I have NO idea how big 'a brownie' is, let alone 'half a brownie!' I'm sure it varies by pan size, but can someone give me an idea of measurements for some different pan sizes? I don't want to waste by not eating enough to get high, but I also don't want to eat too much! Thanks in advance!
     
  2. usually people make brownies out of a 9x12 pan, thats what i use and my brownies come out to be about 3inx1.5 in, it all depends how much/quality of bud you pud in them though!

  6. When making edibles, we do not measure a dose by the pan or by the cut of the brownies alone. Both can vary greatly in content and quality, so measuring solely by size or shape is not accurate. :)


    We measure and determine dose, by taking how much herb you (or the baker) used per pan, the number of total brownies cut, and your personal dosage requirement, into consideration. It's actually very easy. :hello:


    This is a bit long, but may be worth the read if you plan to bake or consume edibles... and there are specific 'points of interest' at the very end if you don't have the time, or find it difficult to follow. :)

    Preface:

    When making a multi-user batch of brownies, rather than a batch intended for a single patient, each person will require more or less depending on their level of intake. If someone is planning on sharing a pan of brownies, it's up to the baker to let folks know how much is in each brownie, so make sure you ask. In a pan, there is no one, single, perfect dose for 'everyone'... Unless everyone in question has the exact same dosage requirements, of course. :) Some people may get blown away by half a brownie, others may need two or three from the same batch.

    This is why, when edibles are shared, some people feel overwhelmed while others wonder if they have been ripped off. It can be risky buying a brownie based solely on another person's experience with the batch, even if they are being honest about how little or much it effected them.
    If you are paying for a brownie, don't buy before you know the amount it contains; know, what you're paying for. It should only cost a little more, than you'd pay for the same bud in smokable-form, to account for the supplies and the added effort of baking.

    You don't want to pay $10 for a brownie that contains only a tenth of a gram, just because the baker has a lower tolerance and 0.10g's knocks his socks off. They should be priced by content, not by the varying tolerance of the baker, or his or her patients.

    The way the math looks when determining edible dose by the batch (the short version):

    'Total Amount Used / Personal dose = Number of Doses Per Batch'

    Once you determine that last number, you simply cut your brownies (or make your edibles, whatever they may be) to size, accordingly.

    If you forgot to calculate before cutting, worry not:

    'Total Amount Used / Number of Brownies Cut = Quantity per Brownie'



    Now the long version (lol :) ), and a few other pointers on dosing correctly..


    For instance, a 5g pan of brownies, made in the same size pan with the same recipe as a 10g pan of brownies, will require larger-cut brownies to accommodate your dosage requirements, versus the 10g pan.


    So let's say you made them yourself. You know that you used a good oil method, you didn't use watery-butter and you didn't rush and quick-fry it.
    Knowing that, you can safely assume your oil is probably more effective than smoking and will require less than you'd normally smoke, to achieve a good strong effect.

    Now let's say you normally smoke 0.35g per session (this is a frequently used, or common 'industry standard' single-dose, but keep in mind intake varies from patient to patient, and it can vary from one strain or batch of herb from the next depending on its quality.. this is why it is a good idea to smoke a bowl before baking with it, to determine your dose).

    If you used 10 grams, and you normally smoke a little over a third of a gram per session, or 0.35g, that's going to be just over 28 powerful doses (10 / 0.35 = 28.57) and it will be 28 doses regardless whether the pan is 9" x 9", 11" x 7" or 18" x 12", regardless how thick or thin the brownies are, regardless whether or not they were baked in a pie dish and cut into slices, or whether they were baked muffin trays and made 15 - 50 cupcake-shaped brownies of varying size.

    The less inert (impotent) brownie mix per dose, or the less the dose is diluted in food, the better of course.

    So it doesn't matter how big or small the pan is, or whether you used one box or three boxes of brownie mix: the number of doses you'd get from that 10 grams would not change, it would still be 28. You will find however, that the more diluted in food your dose is, the longer the effect will last, but the more you may need to consume before feeling that the effects are as strong or powerful as you'd like them to be, where the rate of absorption will be slowed, and less will be absorbed 'in one fell swoop'.


    And if you accidentally got over-excited, and you cut your brownies before deciding how many you wanted to make, causing you to end up with more or fewer than you anticipated (for instance you've cut only 20, when you planned to cut 28), to find how much each brownie now contains:

    10g / 20 = 0.5g per brownie.. in this case you may have an 'extremely' enjoyable experience from a full brownie, or you could wind up a little too buzzed, to enjoy yourself.


    So, in spite of the length of the explanation, it's SUPER easy to determine your dose, regardless how you make your edibles. :)

    As far as "starting with half" goes....

    When you just plain don't know the exact content, or how well the oil was made, it's always good to start with half or less of whatever is considered to be 'a dose'. Inferior processing methods have perpetuated a rumor that you need more material to achieve an edible buzz. That is not the case, when the material has been processed properly.


    And because of this, people who follow quickie-methods, frequently use way, WAY too much herb.... recipes that cut corners can require up to 5 times the material, to achieve the same effect, as a properly made oil.

    So if a person who usually makes quick-oil, happens to forget that he is making a batch, and he allows it to continue heating and breaking down that glandular material for longer than he normally would, he can 'accidentally' wind up with a higher-quality oil than he would usually expect from the amount of material used. Meaning that he or she, and any friends or patients who receive these edibles, could easily 'green out' from not even a half, or just a quarter of a brownie, but a single bite!

    Processing is crucial when determining your dose.. this is why we have so much dosage discrepancy, so many 'greened out' stories, and so many failed-attempt stories.


    When buying edibles, even from most clinics, it's hard to know what you're going to get, even if you know how much they contain. So it's always good to start with half the recommended dose when sampling a new product.


    "Starting with half, then seeing how you feel after 40 - 60 minutes", can prevent you from 'greening out', potentially wasting not only one, but two or more solid doses, and two good medication/sessions.



    But starting with half a dose can still be a good idea, even if you made them yourself, even when you know how potent they are.

    The way your body responds to edibles can vary on a day to day basis, depending on both your immediate, and even your long-term nutrition intake. It can vary based on the contents of your stomach, your mood, your hormonal/chemical levels. Some foods increase cellular permeability and absorption, and some foods cause increased evacuation rate and the potential for less absorption. Digestion, absorption, and how your body handles and processing cannabinoids can vary.

    And if your liver happens to be hungry, and it over-metabolizes that first half-dose, leaving you still comfortable and feeling up for the next half by the time an hour has passed, now that your liver has been satisfied that second half will not only hit you much harder than the first, but it can potentially hit you much harder than you would have been, even if you had eaten both halves all at once. :)


    Long story short, all variables aside, half/dual-dosing can be a great way to get more out of your edibles!

    On a slightly different topic, it's also worth noting that different recipes, require more or less oil than others, so when making your canna oil you either need to make it concentrated enough, that you can dilute it or use it in addition to unadulterated oil if needed, or you need to know exactly what you're going to make with it in advance, so you don't inadvertently use WAY too much oil with too little herb while making your oil, resulting in the need to make and consume too much inert material in the form of numerous baked-goods (ie multiple brownies, for just one single dose).
    Meaning, if you made 1/2 cup of oil containing 28 doses for brownies then changed your mind and decided to make a pasta sauce, it would not be ideal to use in a sauce that requires 1/4 cup of oil, and only serves two people. That 1/4 cup would make 14 brownies, but split between two portions of pasta, the patient or both patients would then become much too overwhelmed by the effects.

    You'd need to use about 3 and a half teaspoons of your canna oil, or a little over a Tbsp, for that pasta sauce, and make up for the rest of the 1/4 required by the recipe in unadulterated or non-canna oil (preferably of the kind, specifically recommended for the recipe).

    TL;DR :D

    Conclusion or Points of Interest (tips on improving the edible experience):

    - Know your dosage size, or how much you'd normally smoke per session.

    - Try to find out how much is in each edible, if you did not make them yourself.

    - If making your own, determine the number of brownies or doses to cut, using the below point.

    - 'Total Amount Used / Personal dose = Number of Doses Per Batch'

    - 'Total Amount Used / Number of Brownies Cut = Amount per Brownie'

    - If you forgot to determine the dose before cutting, use the above point to determine the content per brownie.

    - Take into consideration what you've eaten that day, and how long ago you ate it.

    - If making oil, either make it concentrated, or according to the specific recipe you plan to use.

    - If buying, oil or edibles, take testimony to their effectiveness into light consideration, but most of all, know what you're buying.

If anyone would still like the info on pan-sizes, these are a few common square and rectangular baking pans, and the volume they each can hold... if you use the same recipe or boxed mix, pan-to-pan, each one will produce a brownie of varying thickness (some will be as thick as the pan can possibly allow, and with others, you'd wind up with a sheet of brownie that's thinner than a pancake :p ), so depending on the size of the pan, a two by two inch brownie from one batch, may have half, or double the canna-content, of a two by two inch brownie cut from another.. keep that in mind when baking on a budget, and using multiple pans of varying size:

    8 x 8 x 2 ............ - 2 L
    9 x 9 x 2 ............ - 2.5 L
    11 x7 x 1 1/2 ...... - 1.5 L
    12 x 8 x 2 ........... - 3 L
    13 x 9 x 2 ........... - 3.5 L
    15 x 10 x2 ........... - 4.5 L
    18 x 12 x 2 \t2 L ..... - 5.5 L
