Question about ballast

    My ballast is dimmable and I have a few questions. 
     
    I run 400watt MH/HPS bulbs. To keep heat down, I have been running the 400 watt bulb on the 250watt ballast setting. Is this bad? Will it shorten the life of the bulb or is that only if you run lower watt bulbs on higher ballast settings?
     
    Also, the ballast has an "HQl" setting... what does this do?

    idk what hql means but I have a 1000w dimmable ballast and it has a super lumens option which makes it 10% brighter. Maybe its something like that

    took a sec to look on google what HQL means.  Its a setting for a mercury vapor light
