Putting Salt on ice in bong to make hits cooler?

Discussion in 'Apprentice Marijuana Consumption' started by gigglestick87, Sep 16, 2011.

  1. Is this a good idea?

  2. Thats what the ice is for, no need for salt

  3. Melting ice makes it cooler? Global warming isn't making the wart cold now is it

lol i just know that ice makes the hits pretty cool and i was thinking if I could get cool hits with ice, how much cooler would the hits be when salt is added to the water with ice. Idk, the only reason I thought of this was from this video (lol i love watching these videos when high or not):

  5. Salt=Melt ice
    Salt+water=gross

  6. I see where you are confused here. If you put a bucket of ice into another bucket filled with a rock salt (the salt is not in the bucket of ice but around the outside) it will keep the ice cold and prevent it from melting as fast because ice acts like an insulator. Now, if you put salt IN the bucket of ice it will actually melt the ice and dilute into the water, it looses it's insulating properties once it is dissolved in the water.

So, to answer your original question ... no, salt in your bong won't work BUT if you have a bowl of salt you set your ice filled bong into between sessions it will help keep that water/ice cooler and it will melt slower ... providing you use a rock salt and have enough to surround the entire base of your bong.

  7. the salt will lower the freezing temperature of water. so you can have colder water that doesnt turn to ice.
so if your trying to get really cold water that isnt frozen then yes, salt will help. but i dont think thats what you were going for.

  8. Yeah, sorry about the confusion. I forgot salt had different properties in water than around it (ie. an insulator). Yeah, this would be perfect for a large group setting (totally not worth it though if your with one other person or by yourself though). +rep for you!

  9. actually, this makes complete sense. the salt will melt the ice, which will then become water. however, it will stay at that below zero temperature because salt water freezes at lower temperatures. making your bong water colder than ice.
bud upinsmoke, your method works to keep ice from melting. but what is trying to be achieved is bong water that is colder than ice in the first place.

  10. Am I the only one here that is worried about possibly cracking a bong with this instant-super cold water....
But yeah, I think this could work

  11. hahah im lovin the ideas floating around

  12. I would just get a larger bong and add more ice. Get some crushed ice for the larger surface area.

  13. We actually did this in chemistry the other day yes it would work. We put ice in a beaker(similar to the throat of a bong). Took the temperature of it and was about 40 degrees because the air holes obviously. We then poured salt on the top of the ice within 30 seconds the temperature drop nearly 20 degrees throughout the hole beaker. To my surprise it also does not melt the ice as quick as i thought. To get best results I think you should put about 2 inches of ice then some salt not too much. then repeat until you are at the top of the bong. I would also use crushed ice one i think crushed is better no matter what and two it will act like a barrier for the salt so it stays on the ice and doesn't fall through into the bong water.

  14. It will make the ice (and water) colder. But it will also taste like ass. Your pick.

  15. So, what does it taste like? Can you taste the salt in the water when you bubble the smoke through it? Last time I smoked though plain tap water that does not seem to have a taste to it, the smoke seemed like the smell of dirt after it rains.

  16. Since the salt lowers the freezing point of water, mix salt and water, put it into the freezer, and take it out when it becomes slushy-ish. By doing so, you managed to keep your water much colder for a longer period of time.

This sounds like a wonderful idea, but would the salt get into the smoke? I know inhaling sugar can cause the crystals to reform in your lungs once they cool but would the salt do the same?

Putting ice in water makes the water colder (obviously). When the water temperature reaches 0* C (32* F), the ice stops melting because the water and ice are in thermal equilibrium. Putting salt on the ice melts the ice because the salt lowers the freezing point of water. Now, the melted ice cools the water even more. This allows the water to cool faster since all the ice is melted. So, yes, the water will be colder. IDK if it will make a significant cooling effect on the smoke or vapor since the gas doesn't pass through the water slowly.

  18. Salt melts ice guys. That's the reason why we put salt on the roads during a snow storm. It's also the reason why the ocean doesn't entirely freeze over when the water dips a little below freezing point (assuming there weren't tides lol). The salt lowers the freezing point of water. The water will stay in the liquid phase at a much lower temperature with salt than without. This is due to the fact that the water molecules cannot solidify as salt molecules contain much more energy so they continue to move around. Lower the temperature enough though and the salt molecules move at a slow enough rate that the water molecules can solidify to each other.

Anyways, on topic again, it will make the bong water colder but that won't really have that much of an effect on the temperature of the smoke since the salt water takes up so little volume of the bong and the smoke is diffusing out of the water quickly.

  19. Imagine smoke passing through ice, some of the smoke particles may hit the ice, others may just float through completely without cooling (or cooling very little since they didn't come into direct contact with the ice). Now imagine smoke passing through water that is the same temperature of the ice (since it's mixed with salt, it remains a liquid at the same temperature of the ice cubes), all of the smoke particles pass through the cooled liquid. It seems much more efficient than an ice bong

  20. I've never heard of sugar recrystallizing in your lungs after smoking if you add it to your bong water. But, to answer your question, no it wouldn't unless somehow THC attracts Na+ or Cl- ions. It doesn't attract them though. Salt is simply an ion that dissociates in water. Sugar, on the other hand, is a polar molecule. It will dissolve in the water because water is also a polar molecule. Like dissolves like. THC is a non-polar molecule compared to water and sugar. It will reduce the polarity of the new bong "water" because the water is no longer all symmetric H2O molecules (there are now sugar molecules). More THC will be absorbed within the sugar water than it just being water which would get you you less high :(. Salt water will not affect polarity, only the pH scale which does not matter in this case.

Interesting side note, add epsom salt and ethanol to your bong when you go to clean it next time. The salt will help scrape off the resin in your bong when you shake it and, because ethanol is a nonpolar molecule and so is THC, it will dissolve the resin attached to your bong. Wash it out after about 5-10 minutes after continuously shaking it and your bong will look clean as fuck.
