Purple Haze LED Grow_Veg Stage

  1. So I'm in day 32 veg and trying to consider when to start flowering these girls...they look ready? I was thinking waiting an extra couple weeks to see if that increases yield but ...just not sure what's best-- let em grow big -- or let them just start flowering now

  2. Typically, the larger the plant, the better the yield...which is just plain old common sense. Once you throw them into flower, they're going to double or triple the size they were when you first flipped the lights (assuming you've got good strong light in your flower space). Also, the light only penetrates around 8-10 inches below the canopy, so it's not a bad idea to do some trimming of bottom scrap below the canopy and get it out of the way before you flip so no energy is wasted going to those places. I generally veg mine for at least a couple of months before I flip them for flower. But I flower in a good size room with no height restrictions and my lights are hooked up to a winch so I can raise them all the way to the ceiling if necessary. I know that a lot of people don't have that luxury and are forced to keep their plants small due to space concerns. We start out with clones which go into Solo cups for about 7-8 days and then to 1 gallon pots for a couple of weeks. At this point, they go into larger containers that I intend to flower in. Because I up pot 2 or 3 times during the veg stage, I don't have to use a lot of nutes (since each fresh pot of soil is sort of a natural reload of food for them) and by restricting the area they must root into as they come up from clones, I force faster foliage growth. Your plants look nice and lush and really, you can flip the lights whenever you're ready according to your needs. I just like to grow mine as big as possible before I put them in for flower so I harvest more. But they'll really take off when you start the flowering cycle with them. And....bud formation is directly proportional to how much light they get. So, if you're flowering with CFLs, don't expect fat, tight buds as they just don't flower well unless you've got a BUNCH around your plants (of the proper spectrum) and even then, don't come close to the other forms of light for flowering. HPS and LED are great for flowering but the HPS puts off a lot of heat and the LEDs (of any reasonable quality) are so very expensive. But...you've got to have one or the other and just deal with whatever the issue is. LOL As long as your plants are healthy and happy, flower them whenever you're ready. Be careful and don't overcrowd your lighting though. Doing that is kind of like shooting yourself in the foot. Realistically, any of this lighting is only going to cover so much square footage and 90% of the time, the lighting manufacturer says it'll do a bit more than it actually will. But shading out one plant with another just decreases your overall harvest. We flower with 1000 watt hps lights and I generally don't flower more than 4 or 5 under one light. Sometimes I'll go a few more, but constantly rotate them so they're lit evenly. The more you grow the more you know and trial and error is a great learning tool. If you're not up for that, then go to the new grower threads here and do some reading. There are lots of posts there that contain all the basics you need to know to get one from seed to harvest and keep it alive to produce some good buds. It took me about a year to figure it all out and feel comfortable taking one all the way through to harvest. And boy, did I make some dumb mistakes along the way. LOL We all do. Most of all...have fun with it. They're weeds and hardy as crap and will try hard to live under the most god awful conditions. But information is most definitely your friend. The more you have of it, the less stress it ends up being. Hope it turns out well!! TWW
