Purebreds- original strains

a stable strain, or true-breeding strain, consistantly passes a set of traits on to its offspring. This means the fillial generations are moderately predictable

to get this, you can attain a landrace strain (if you can still get ahold of an untampered one). This is what most breeders were working with back in the day. You cross two of them, boom, new F1 strain.

if you want to make your own, new stabilized true-breeding strain, it can be done with almost any two parent plants you wish. You breed them together, and have several options from here. You can continue breeding the offspring into each other, selecting for various traits and phenotypes / genotypes that you can figure out. Or, you can occasionally backcross with one of the parents. Just depends on which way fits your goal better.

as you move forward, youre going to lose some traits, some variation. this is what makes your strain more "true-breeding". youll lose some vigor, maybe some resistance to disease / mold / whatever, maybe a little potency / yield, who knows. This happens, its called inbreeding depression. To undo it, take your finished, true-breeding project, and outcross it, making a new F1. your vigor and such should be mostly restored, assuming good parents are selected

 

OK I am new to the site and have a Vast amount of knowlege on all subjects cannabis I am having difficulty in trying to relay imformation because I am not computer savy but did create the strain BUBBLEGUM as a true breeder I lost the strain in 1985 and then it went on to become famous at SERIOUS SEEDS. I can and will tell the TRUE story of how this straincame to be.

i just saw a you tube interview not to long ago about your loss n luck as it were(if i'm not mistaken). cool to have ya here.

LBH , I am alittle confused about all of what your askin but i have been tryin to learn about alot of this stuff too. thai is one of the old landraces that was used in many of the crosses back then . thai was in my research as one of the most used landraces with alot of potentail for many different things . whether it be flavour n potency n all. oaxen( misspelled) was one that turns up alot as well as columbian gold. then you have the classic indica's. n hash makers.

wats more is from my understanding about alot of the seeds for sale today that they are hybrids. they are not stablized strains.,so when you buy them they are not realy ready to be crossed yet. you have to stablize them first , th3n cross n backross or cube. this will result in a new strain. not a hybrid . am still learnig so please correct me if i'm wrong. certain places like serious whose strains are worked to be total quality from the get go so crosssing wont be a problem. at least from what ive researched.

 

I think he's asking for original strains. Afghanistan, Pakistan, Korean, Thai, Cambodian, Mexican, Columbian, african and Indian landrace strains.

from what ive seen th was suposed to have worked with serious n a collective growing scene and the guy from th says he created it in 92 i think . then some one broke in to steal them n destroyed his stuff but was lucky to have save on mom and was givin to srious in one way or another.

People are all going to have their own opinions on how many true, uncrossed strains there are out there.

I think what it boils down to is the same thing that separated other species. Usually geologic, meteorologic, and oceanographic processes isolate species from spreading and just being uniform all over the globe.

For instance, Hawaii is so far displaced that once every ten thousand years a new species was introduced by air (birdshit), or sea (coconuts in a hurricane). The Himalayas form a boundary between India and Asia that manipulates the way plant A and Plant B perform and evolve even though they were the same genetics originally, etc.

Breaking it down by continent, and major geological boundaries (mountains, oceans, etc), we can get an idea of how many original "landrace" strains there are.

Africa:
Regionally there are four parts of Africa, South Africa savannah, East African highlands and river valleys, West African jungle, and North African deserts. I can assume that cannabis was spread all over africa because Africa was inhabited by some of the oldest humans (and from what I understand we used hemp back then a lot). Durban is a popular south African strain, but I would imagine it's part of the South African genotype. The West African Congo probably has it's own genotype that is nothing like the desert weed, the savannah weed, ot the highlands weed.

This is all simply speculation, and there are microclimates all over each continent that don't fit the generalization of the area. So for all you who want to argue, I agree my theory has it's holes.

Asia:
Tundra up North; Temperate in the East; Desertous inland; Jungles to the South... plus all the islands.
I would imagine each climate has it's own landrace strain. The islands are a little more difficult to tell though. For instance, Hawaii does not have an indigenous strain of cannabis. They were all brough in by settlers over the centuries, and it wasn't always well documented as to where the plants were from. Probably the same with most islands. Most species are introduced by people, plain and simple.

Europe:
Temperate and Mediterranean climates. I don't even know of a landrace strain from Europe... Greece and Germany aren't known for their indigenous species of marijuana. I need enlightenment here! And Holland doesn't count. Humans just picked that place because of their leniency, not their local pot.

South America:
Andes mountains; Brazilian pantanal; Patagonia; the isthmus...

Central and North America:
Jungles in the Yucatan and Central America; Southwestern USA/Mexico desert; Northeastern temperate; Western Temperate; Pacific Northwest...

Madagascar? Ausrtalia and Oceana...

How many of these places actually have INDIGENOUS strains?

It's not just Indica, Sativa, and Ruderalis

 

Although it is nobody's place to doubt your claim... because you let it slip through your fingers you cannot ask for credit. Sorry dude, but people are just going to think you are full of shit with claims like that. I mean no offense, but I offer perspective.

 

I think FarNorCal summed it up best. The differences come from the geographical origins of the strain. Not sure if thats relevant or not, just my thoughts, lol...

 

yeah i have to mostly agree here . i am not discrediting you mean bean i am just saying this is what i am to understand its origen. however you may have very well done the same breeding and come up with the very same or similar genetic but will not get much people believing you without any response . i will give you the benefit of doubt and say if you have extensive knowledge it would be an asset for us in the city. i hope to hear this story either way.

Bubble Gum

There are several strains out in the world of cannabis genetics whose origin and further breeding process seem to be unclear. Growers get especially confused, when a certain strain is offered under the same name by two or more seed banks: who has the original one, whose are copies?

Bubble Gum is such one contentious strain, of which at least two seed banks do offer their own versions, in this case Serious Seeds and T.H. Seeds (both residing in Amsterdam), not to mention all those internet-based criminal copy cats here. So I decided to trace back the real roots of Bubble Gum. Asking both the above-mentioned breeders resulted in two corresponding versions of the Bubble Gum's breeding story, giving good reasons for the existence of two high-quality Bubble Gum strains.

A grower in Indiana (USA) developed the original material during the 80ies. In 1993, this guy gave three very different female Bubble Gum plants to Adam from T.H. Seeds as well as to Simon and Tony (the two splitted up shortly after, with Simon founding Serious Seeds and Tony Sagarmatha Seeds) from Cerebral Seeds. So Bubble Gum arrived in the Netherlands in the hands of three breeders. And from that moment on, different new chapters were written in the breeding history of Bubble Gum, its development kind of branched out. Three breeders - three ways of breeding: These seed masters were going to make their own special selection out of the three different genetic types they had received.

Simon reports: "As far as I know, T.H. Seeds did work further with another of those 3 plants than I did". That's the reason why Adam (T.H. Seeds` BG will be another story...) considers his Bubble Gum as "mostly indica", whereas Simon puts his version into the "Mostly Sativa" category. He focused his research on two of the three lines, finally deciding for one type that should become his Bubble Gum seed strain.

It took Simon five generations to end up in the desired breeding result, officially registering it as "Bubble Gum". He says that it is not possible to give exact sativa/indica percentages, but reveals that the genetic background of Bubble Gum consists of three different exotic sativas, amongst them Mexican and Columbian, and an Afghani indica.

It is remarkable that Bubble Gum is the only inbred strain (no F1 hybrid) in the Serious Seeds menu, thus being especially uniform. Upon being asked about special considerations to Bubble Gum, Simon explained: "The bubble gum shows a remarkable uniformity in plants grown from seeds. It is a strong and beautiful plant, which grows a heavy stem, you never need to tie heavy buds up. The initial stages of seedlings can be tender, and you have to take care a bit for them in that stage. It is important to not let them be overgrown by neighbouring plants, which may grow faster at first. When about 2 weeks old the Bubble Gum will start to pick up speed and grow as fast as other plants." This delay in growth can be explained by the fact that the BG is an inbred strain and therefore does not have that hybrid vigour effect (faster and stronger growth) of F1 hybrids.

Keeping these hints in mind, I sow four BG seeds - only four seeds, due to the chronic congestion on my seed-testing list. They really showed off the ground one day later than common, but germinated properly and simultaneously. And in fact, the overall growth speed was slow at first, but increased significantly after two weeks. When the multiple-finger leafs had been formed, their look was quite unusual: dark green in the colour (indica trait), but at the same time rather narrow and sharply serrated (sativa traits).

After five weeks from germination, they had grown into medium tall plants (55-65 cm) under HPS 400 + 250 W, with few side branching. But due to the dominating sativa content, it was clear that they would further stretch during flowering. Two plants turned out to be female and soon developed the first flower clusters after having turned the lights to 12/12. And one could quickly realize that huge top colas were about to be produced by the plants.

After four weeks of flowering, the buds began to release a sweet fruity scent that was going to become more intensive from week to week, really reminding of fruity chewing gum. Also resin production had gotten into full speed, conquering more and more of the plants` surface. The buds grew into very compact resinous heads, featuring a high calyx-to-leaf ratio, thus allowing for easy harvest processing.

After 58 resp. 61 days of flowering, harvest was not only easy, but also rewarding, as the two BG plants yielded 25 resp. 28 grams of finest sticky sinsemilla. As expected, they had kept on growing vertically during flowering, finally amounting to 91 resp. 102 cm. But this contributed to the formation of long-drawn, heavy yielding main colas.

The buds were pleasantly mild to smoke and had preserved some of that special fruitiness also after the drying process. No surprise that the high delivered a pretty strong sativa power dosage, with euphoric tendencies, at least it will make you blow some funny fantasy bubbles in your mind.

The indica aspect, however, is also noticeable, causing a certain degree of stonedness, too. This nice mixture of both sides of the spectrum makes Serious Seeds` Bubble Gum an attractive experience, and accordingly, it has won several awards, e.g. at the High Times Cannabis Cup 1994, 1995 and 1999.

It may be new to some that Bubble Gum is also a good choice for outdoor cultivation. While rather taking place on the balcony in Holland, it is also successfully practised in the great Spanish outdoors, as Simon reports: "Bubble Gum is also liked for outdoors in Spain a lot, it will also form a very nice plant with moult resistance buds when grown outdoors here but just finishes not soon enough for my standards to call it an outdoor plant. Normal finishing date 1-15 oct."

joe i like ya man bt after reading the journal i am not sure if its the same guy. this guy on here says he has a hard time typing n using computorsn the link has the guy on 20 pages n growing an led that didnt look like all that great of bud. its just my opinion . he may very well be a guy who did whatever he claims but i wonder if he'll even comment back ? seems like a play for buzz.
