Puerto rico may become 51st state

  1. Did anyone else hear about this prior to yesterday? I just found out and apparently the people of Puerto Rico voted and decided to join the union! It's unlikely to happen with a republican house but if things start to change in the next few years we could be adding another star to the flag.

  2. holy shit. what?

then fuck. give us alaska and keep your flag the same ;)

  3. Welcome to the US Boricuas

  4. There is no republicans and democrats. Only the man

  5. No, I won't have any of it. I like having 50 states. Odd numbers bother me.

  6. Wtf. Why should they get to vote on whether or not they become a part of OUR country. Why don't WE get to vote on it. Not trying to sound racist or anything like that, but that kind of pisses me off.

  7. Maybe they're voting to make us apart of their country

  8. So give me alaska damnit. take all the people out of alaska too, they've probably had enough and can get free rent in Hawaii, for 6 months :)

  9. Because they're a US territory that would lose some benefits and gain some benefits if they became a state instead of their own country.

  10. They already are a part of our country, just not a state. Puerto Rico is considered a territory.

Because they're basically just a colony owned by the United States. They weren't a country or really even part of one and when they decided they wanted to be they joined the one that owned them, It makes sense to me. What doesn't make sense is that congress will deny them just because the majority of them all have democratic beliefs. They want to deny these people the benefits of joining the union for there own self interest, something our founding fathers would have been disgusted by if they saw this.

  12. Yeah sorry guys, I was already in a bad mood about something else and reading that kinda pissed me off more for some reason. Idc what they do, I'm kinda partial to 50 states personally, but whatever

Understandable man. But things change. Can't be stuck on the present. It's honestly been a matter if time, for a while now, that the territory of Puerto Rico would want to become a full fledged state.

  14. It's non-binding. It's not like they are going to be a state anytime soon. I don't see any reason to keep them from becoming one. They have been a tax farmed colony long enough. This is a good chance for the Republican party to steal the minorities vote.

They practically are one now aren't they? Theyre free to travel back and forth without a passport correct? (I know they're a territory) what would them becoming a state change? Just that they can vote in US elections? I'm sure there must be other benefits too

They would be able to recieve more financial help as well as tax their citizens. More trade will be opened up for them with all of United States allies. Also they will actually get a vote in congress, right now they have a representative who can voice his opinion but can't vote. Their economy should greatly improve if they become a state which would be a good thing for a lot of people. To become a state they're willing to change their offical language to english and think about the cost of stuff down there. They are aware of the inflattion they'd see with statehood but are willing to accept it to become part of the union. If they're willing to sacrifice this it shows how much they want it, Lets let them have it.

    Thanks for clarifying :smoke:

  19. Nah, fuck you guys. Puerto Rico is part of Latin america and it can't be part of the U.S. It wouldn't make sense.

Isn't enough that the U.S. spans from the Atlantic to the Pacific? Why do you need a little island that has nothing in common with the states to be part of your country? Stop being greedy U.S.

You already got Hawaii, Guam and American Samoa. I hope PR never becomes part of the U.S.
