So I'm a Freshman in college and I have a public speaking course on Tuesdays and Thursdays, well yesterday (tuesday) he told us that on thursday (tomorrow) we would have to give a 3 minute presentation on "An important person in our life, who we don't know personally" (What a stupid fucking topic!) So, here I am, roughly 22 hours before the presentation, and I've decided to do it on Bradley Nowell (In case you live under a rock, he was the singer for Sublime) Now I'm writing the speech and listening to Sublime. I must admit I'm pretty damn nervous, since I'm an introvert for the most part, nor do I have experience speaking in front of a large group of people So, does anyone have any tips on not looking like an idiot, or any funny stories about something similar?
I hate public speaking too man, I feel for you. Personally I'm even worse at it when I'm high because I get paranoid and over analyze everything (I convince myself that everyone knows I'm high and stuff like that). Honestly, many people here are not going to like my advice... but drink some alcohol. Don't get drunk, just take a shot or two to calm your nerves and loosen up a bit. Just make sure you're not actually drunk because being drunk in class can and will end very badly. Good luck and let us know how it goes!
Goodluck I hate public speaking man. One tip that I always mess up on is KEEP A NICE LOUD CLEAR VOICE.
I've decided to do the speech on Bob Marley instead Theres more to talk about, and the audience will be more interested because everyone knows who Bob Marley is I'm probably gonna smoke a fat joint before class, and volunteer to go second or third so i can just chill for the rest of class and watch everyone else be nervous
Before you go up to speak make sure you look down and make sure you have pants on. You def don't want to be up there speaking without pants.
Bob Marley was probably a better choice, glad you picked him. Most people don't know who Bradley Nowell is, i didn't and i have like 5 songs of sumblime in my itunes. meh
Don't do Bob Marley man... that's kind of weak sauce IMO. Don't smoke before class either. Man up and be the first one on stage, people expect less from the first presentation. Maintain constant eye contact with everyone in the class, don't be afraid to use your hands and project your voice. Rehearse 6-8 times periodically throughout the hours before you go. I have taken classes on public speaking at university in addition to private lessons, it's an incredibly valuable ability to possess.
Deep breaths Don't be readin from your notes Try to know what your gonna say before you say it Be cool, talk to the class, I am sure most of them are around your age anyway.
Just crack a few jokes and youll be fine. 3 minutes isnt that long anyway itll go by pretty quick. By the end of the semester youll be doin 10-15 minute speeches no probleM!
Yeah but we have to write about someone that inspires us I'm a huge fan of Reggae, so I thought he was a good topic and although everyone knows WHO he is, alot of people don't know much about him
I used to hate public speaking, until I took a course for it and now it's not a problem. It's hard at first, but every speech just gets a little easier until you can bullshit for 3 minutes about whatever on the spot. The only way to get more comfortable with talking in front of people is doing it a lot.
We had two guys in my intro class that just didn't know what to do with their hands and didn't pay any attention to them once they started their speeches. One I like to call, "Up". Up started his speech with his hands at his sides and then drew them up until he was nervously fooling around with his belly button during his whole speech. The other guy I call, "Down". He always had one hand down his pants for the whole speech - not fiddling around with anything mind you, just keeping it warm or something. You will want to be aware of your surroundings and your body at all times. Bob Marley is a good choice.
I actually just got through my public speaking class, got an A in it by making speeches about nothing but drugs. I wasnt trying to be cool its just easier to pick something you could talk about off the top of your head. Honestly your going to be nervous waiting to be called but once you get up there and start talking you'll realize its not so bad and you might even have fun with it.
Man I hate public speaking so much.... like I start shaking and shit lol it's really bad. I think if you know your shit you're not gonna be nervous, I always get nervous when I don't know my info.
