Pruning...

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by ogderp84, Nov 9, 2014.

  1. Can not seem to get the search function to find anything I'm actually searching for, so if there is a thread I apologize and if you could provide a link or two it would be greatly appreciated, ( even a link to just some reading material )

But anyway... Pruning, what signs personally do you look out for in order to know when it is ok to begin to prune.

How do you personally know what TO cut, and what NOT to cut?

I recently was given a clone that was in rough, bushy as hell condition... And I'm slowly bringing her back up to par.

The clone guy at my work suggested/recommended me cutting a lot of the fan leaves off... Others have told me never to cut fan leaves because your plant needs them in order to get it's food and energy... Which, that isn't the only way they get nutrients and shit... But maybe you aren't supposed to for another reason...

    Anyone care to share?

Here is a picture of my plant prior to any pruning that will occur.

  3. Reasons for cutting off fan leaves:

    • You have plants growing in a tight space up against a wall, so you can remove leaves pressing against the wall
    • You have plants in a ScroG, and because of space issues you have to remove some leaves to stop it getting too crowded
    • You have plants LSTd in a small space, and they start to butt up against each other, you can remove leaves to improve airflow and reduce humidity in the canopy
    • You are growing LSTd plants with CFLS, you may want to remove a couple of leaves only to open up the deeper parts of the plant to light
    • If leaves are damaged or diseased
None of these apply to your situation, in fact you could do with more leaves!

These plants are already pretty stretchy, so I would warn you that when you start to flower them, they will try to double in height and it will be all stem, few new leaves.  If this is going to cause you height problems in your space, you need to act in advance by either adapting your space, training your plants to keep them low, or switching from veg to flower already.

  4. Don't cut anything until harvest

  5. thank you for the input, the first pic I posted she has stretched like crazy and I'm not sure why, just randomly one day she grew 4 inches while I was at work, with a cfl 2 inches above... I just don't understand. Thank you for the pruning input., what would happen of you were to cut off all the fan leaves?

  6.
Leaves are where the plant converts light in to energy.  If you removed many/all of the leaves, the plant would not be able to produce energy to grow, flower, or live.

For most people. removing 1 or 2 leaves is nothing because they have a hundred on the plant.  For you, 1 or 2 leaves is almost all of them!  Don't do it!

  7. Haha I know!!!! What te heck haha

  8. They're not bushy by no means, stretchy might be a better word. Keep the leaves

  9. I once read that any fan leaves with blades larger than four inches (with no bud sites at the stem) mahouts be trimmed.

I read another place that every time u water 10-20% of fan leaves could be trimmed. I trim 5-10 fan leaves at every water, mostly the leaves that seem to keep light from reaching the lower parts if the plant. In the past week I've removed about 20-30 big fan leaves that were long and stemmy. Girls seem very happy still.
