Hello guys, So my side of the balcony (only place i can grow) can get very very windy, btw plant I'm growing is an auto flower Indica dominant strain (Afghan Skunk) , I picked auto flower because of not so perfect conditions, any how, I initially had two, this one and a Auto flowering Amnesia plant (sativa dominant) and I actually had both of these plants side by side in the middle of the balcony , aka no wind protection at all but I thought that'd make em strong... moving on, the Amnesia which was a bit more developed actually snapped (broke) from the wind and died , as soon as that happened I moved my Afghan Skunk next to the vase of my orchids , that way she had the vase as protection but now she's just about to grow taller then the orchids vase so my fear has came back.. The plant is like 1 week into flowering, very nice smelling and plenty of white hairs are visible, she's started to branch too, but I really don't want her to die because of the wind, what can I do? My orchids and tomatoes are very strong and thick plants , but the cannabis plant just doesn't seem to be a wind lover , she isn't super thick and specially now with new branches starting to grow... (and no , it's not because of being protected by the vase because even then shes being balanced all day from the wind, and rests at night, simply by the vase the winds dont get dangerously high) What can one do??? Thanks in advance
If you keep your main branches tied off and somewhat secure, they should be okay. You want to tie them off so they can still be blown around, but not move far enough to snap. We got some wicked winds here last week that took down a couple trees behind my house, blew my deck umbrella into the back yard, and made a mess of the driveway, it even blew one of my plants and pot completely over. If they weren't tied down I'm sure they would have snapped.
I see, with tied down ,do you mean like drilling holes in the vase? and tightly tying a "rope" to the branches but not enough to bend the plant? Cuz I dont wanna induce stress to it (auto flower)
Run some garden ties from your main branches down to the base of the pot. Also put a thin stake into the plant that is as tall or taller than the plant so you can tie a branch down about halfway up it, and near the top of that same branch you can tie off across to that stake. You end up with your branches held up, and held down. So they will be able to be blown around and move, but if you tie all the branches off the whole plant moves as one and is much more stable, less likely for one branch to move enough to snap.
Your plants are going to bend everytime the wind hits them. It will be less stress for them if they are tied off and secure, even if they are under a little bit of constant tension. It's better than the branches constantly being stressed getting blown around everywhere and risking a branch snapping. Bending is very low stress, once a branch rips or snap, that's huge stress.
