Problems with Tincture

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by Thorman6, Nov 20, 2018.

  1. Hello friends! So, I decided I wanted to make some gummies, so I made some tincture first of course. I followed the instructions to the letter (not really. I doubled the amount of bud and kept the amount of everclear about the same, but everything else I followed exactly!). I de-carbed the weed at 250° for 30 minutes, and once it was cool enough to touch, dumped it into the everclear, and put the lid on my mason jar. I’ve been shaking it regularly (i hear it helps speed the process up and get alllllll the thc out), and the recipe said it would be done in about 2 weeks. Ever since the two week mark, I’ve been pulling it out and trying a few drops (I heard dosage is anywhere from 2-5 drops, and this is double the weed and I’ve been using wayyyyyyy more than 2-5 drops) once a week, and by now it’s been over a month, and I still don’t feel anything from it! If anybody has any potential problem diagnoses or solutions, that would be a great help! Thank you so much

  2. You probably didn't evaporate/boil off enough alcohol.
For example, using 2 cups alcohol plus 1 oz 15% thc flower to make tincture is common, and if you did that, the potency is calculated as follows. You can change the numbers in the calculation to match the actual amounts you used.
    THC = (0.15)*(28,000 mg) = 4200 mg
    2 Cups = 237 mL
    Potency = (4200 mg thc)/(237 mL) = 18 mg/mL
Each mL contains about 30 drops, so each drop of your tincture would have about 0.6 mg thc.

Many of us would need several droppers full to feel anything, and even a new user would need about 17 drops to get a small 10 mg dose.

  4. Oh! I didn’t realize I had to evaporate or boil off ANY alcohol. Approximately how much should boiled or evaporated off, and what’s the most effective way to go about that?

  5. So! Just did the math.
    THC— (.15)(7000mg)= 1,050mg
    4.5 oz= 133ml
    Potency—(1,050mg)/(133ml)= 7.89 mg of thc/ml of Solution

Based on this math (because I realized I asked you how much I should boil off before you knew how much there was), can you approximate how much alcohol I’ll need to boil off?

  6. How much alcohol to eliminate is a matter of personal preference.
I usually use 30 g decarbed herb powder to fill one 30 mL (1 fl oz) tincture bottle, which produces a potency of about
    (0.15)*(30,000 mg)/(30 mL) = 150 mg/mL ~ 5 mg/drop.

If you were to eliminate all but 30 mL, then 1 drop would be about (7/30)*(5 mg/drop) ~ 1.2 mg.
But you can make the strength anything.

Most people frown on boiling off the alcohol on a stove, but that's what I used to do before getting an alcohol still.
But good ventilation is needed with a covered burner electric stove, and sparks are hazardous.
It's difficult to know how much tincture remains during the boil off, but if too much is eliminated, some alcohol can always be added back.

  7. I like the idea of using herb powder in a very small amount of alcohol, would you mind expanding on that? I couldn’t afford an ounce, but I could do a half, in a half ounce of everclear? How do you make herb powder though? Just really really grind the hell out of it? Before or after baking?

  8. Just take in more alcohol, say a dropper and a half. The THC is in there, you just need to injest enough.

  9. As potfiend says, ingest enough, and you'll get medicated, but you might also feel the alcohol.

I like to decarb first, then grind to powder.
Undecarbed herb is very sticky, and will gum up your grinder.
Grinding to powder increases absorption into the alcohol, as does long soaking with frequent shaking, but makes straining more difficult.
    Any coffee grinder will work.

The more alcohol you use, the better it will absorb, but the more gets wasted.
I probably wouldn't use less than 8 oz alcohol for 1/2 oz herb, for fear of leaving too much medicine behind. I actually do several alcohol washes over several days or weeks, until a 1 day soak picks up nothing.

An easier alternative to gummies is to make firecracker spread, but it won't taste good.
Here's the recipe I use based on BrassNwood's methods. This 2 gram version can be multiplied for bigger batches:
    (1) Decarb 2 g herb @ 240 F for 40 min.
    (2) Grind to fine powder.
    (3) Combine herb, 2 g lecithin liquid, and 30 g nut butter or nutella into a heatable/freezable container.
    (4) Quickly pre-heat the mixture to 220 F on a stove top, then bake at that temp for 20 min.
    (5) Freeze the mixture for a couple hours or so, then thaw.
    (6) Repeat step (4).
    (7) I carefully weigh out 4 g of this mixture onto crackers, then eat. Each 4 g will have about 40 mg thc. This will make 8, 4 g servings, with a couple of grams left over to account for wastage.

Whole herb does bother some stomachs, but using it is much more potent than makingstrained oils first. Unlike oils, strained 190 proof ethanol tincture makes nearly complete use the medicine.

I also make cookies (following the first 5 steps above) in batches of 30, using 7.5 g herb, 7.5 g lecithin, and the amount of oil the recipe calls for. Each cookie has about 40 mg thc.

This is a quart jar of decarbed Bud scraps left after I shake most of the kief off.
Dump in a full fifth of 151-190 proof Everclear. Shake 10 seconds and it's done.
The alcohol does it's work of stripping the trichomes in the first few seconds of contact.
Long soaks bring on more waxes and chlorophyll that your really don't need IMO.

You only need slightly more booze then enough to fully cover the weed and agitate it.

A potato ricer works well for squeezing the alcohol from the weed.

This is strong enough that a single eyedropper is felt with no doubt of it's strength.

  11. Hey guys, so I really screwed the pooch this time. I went home for thanksgiving and figured it was fine to leave the tincture uncapped to let it evaporate off most of the alcohol, but it evaporated off ALL of the alcohol. If I add more, will it re-hydrate like I’m hoping it will? Or is this batch just fucked?

  12. I’m sorry, I’m afraid I don’t understand. In a previous post, you said an ounce of weed powder to an ounce of everclear, and in this one you say you wouldn’t use less than 8oz for a 1/2 oz?

  13. Yeah, just add a little fresh alcohol to it, however much for the potency you want. You may have to warm it a little but there shouldn't be any problem. :)
