Hi im a bit new, and im not sure if this should be in here or the advanced grow. But im going to do my first grow this year and everything looks good except for there is tons of ditchweed around my farm and I was wondering if there was any way at all to prevent any pollen transfer by possibly cutting the pistils? Like I said its my first and indoor isnt really an option. Thanks
That's going to be tough. You could try and locate you ditchweed and pull them or you would have to enclose you female plants somehow. Doing either will probably not be full proof.
figure out which way the wind blows this time of year. head up wind from your crop and pull any ditch-weed plants you see. that way you don't have to seek and destroy ALL the surrounding plants. *i've never grown outdoors before, but this seems like a logical thing to do*
man, that's going to suck. I can't think of any way to pollen-proof your plants. I've picked up a few seeds in my girls from somewhere out in the neighborhood...and I'm in a suburban setting with no stands of ditch-weed that I'm aware of.
wow thanks guys i was hoping there was some way i could possibly cut the pistels out of the females cuz when i say theres a lot of ditch weed i mean a LOT
I live in Sonoma Co., California. we don't have dichweed but i have neighbors who are not very smart about growing. Last season I had 10+ pounds get pollinated. I was searching for information when i ran across your post. I have a game plan for my situation not sure if it will even work, however, i'm putting up a 8 foot privacy screen. I plan on spraying with oil of some kind to make the cloth sticky and hope that will do the trick. Also, plan to prevent any plants from growing next door if i can help it.
Why don't you just help educate your neighbors on how to grow and identify females/males early? Spread the weed growing love.
I'm in a similar situation where I'm surrounded by ditchweed. My theoretical workaround is pretty much to wait until around mid-june when the male hemp plants have hopefully shed their pollen, and then plant some fast-finishing strains. I do have a few questions, though. When do the males finish shedding their pollen, and at what stage in a marijuana plant's lifecycle can a female be pollinated? I feel like if timed right one might be able to avoid cross-pollination altogether.
This doesn't make any sense from a natural standpoint. Think about it, how would cannabis propagate itself if males and females flowered at such different times? Males don't shed pollen in June IME.
Well, I'm told ditchweed is ruderalis and it has a much faster growing cycle. Unfortunately I'm starting to think that wild growing patterns are too unpredictable to work around. I may try planting in a windbreak and proactively cutting down males in a 300m radius, but even then chances are one would see some pollination. I guess the question is how much, but I doubt anyone knows the answer to that.
