Pre-fabricated, automated grow closets: what is your experience?

Discussion in 'Grow Room Design/Setup' started by (-OSB-), Jan 25, 2010.

  1. Good morning folks,

I did a few searches and found some really interested threads about folks building their own setups. There are definitely some very talented folks here! :hello:

I did not find much in terms of personal experience feedback when it comes to pre-fabricated, automated grow closets. I am a registered Medical MJ user in California, and I am looking for a discreet, secure manner of growing my own medicine. I have three children ages 7 and under, so discreet and secure are high priorities. Our home is fairly small, so I am considering a tall closet unit to place in the garage.

I'm not looking to grow more than I use to medicate, on average about 1 oz per month. I have looked at a number of setups, and like the option of having a mother and clones going at the same time that I am working on flowering a small harvest.

My missus stays at home with the kids, and I have a corporate job where I am typically gone most of the day, with periods of occasional travel as well (usually no more than 10 day trips). This is one of the reasons why I am drawn to the automation features of a closet, as well as the discreet and secure nature of a lockable unit. I'd definitely check on my indoor garden regularly (I'm a non-cannabis gardener outdoors), just need a different option/setup given my situation.

Does anybody have any experience with these automated grow closets that could speak to their viability to provide for a single medical user?

Thanks in advance for any insight you may be able to provide.

  2. I do not have any experience, or have even seen these units. I would enjoy some help on them too.

I was recently debating the possibility of using a PLC to automate a grow however. There is a PLC here:
Low cost microcontroller board for embedded control

I like that it is able to drive its 16 digitals as inputs or outputs selectively. And the outputs will drive 8w at 24v. Also two analog inputs. I just dug it up though, so I was going to try to look into it more.

  3. I would recommend going to your local hydro store. Many have automated systems and the workers usually know their products well. I haven't come across someone who has bought an automated premade system on here. I personally built my own setup, but it is in no way automated.
