Power Strip Timer

Discussion in 'Lighting' started by Gary420, Feb 1, 2011.

  1. Hi guys, I just put my germinated seeds into soil, but now I need to handle the lighting. I am currently growing the young plants in a 10 gallon fish tank, lined with reflective material. My main problem is that I am away or sleeping when i need to turn the lights on/off. So I require some sort of device to switch the power on/off for me. What do you guys recommend. I went to Home Depot, and they told me that i can buy a power strip with a timer on it, however, every day I would have to wind it up to how many hours I wanted it on, which is not very practical. What do you guys use to turn the lights on? Thanks for the help guys!

  2. For starters I fish tank is not a good container to grow in it has no drainage which can lead to root rot and other problems. As for timers you can get a cheap manual timer or a digital timer, I prefer Intermatic digital timers they cost a little more but are worth it, My oldest Intermatic digital timer is going on 8 years old and still works fine, I only had to replace the small batteries inside for back up memory.

  3. Hi, I went to Walgreens, and they had a digital timer, that i can have turn on at 12:00, and be on for 18 hours, and than turn off for 6. So that problem is solved.

As for the fish tank, I am not actually growing in the fish tank as a medium, i have the actual seedlings in plastic cups, and i put the cups in the fish tank, and the tank is lined with reflective material. It is actually just my youngling grow zone, and than i will transfer to 5 gal. pots, and move them elsewhere.

Ah ok, your just using the tank for a small grow box for baby plants in cups. Atleast you got your timer problem fixed. I had a cheap digital timer from Lowes that lasted about 2 weeks then had a problem with another timer that was a mechanical one that wouldnt shut off the light and it was only about a week old. So I just decided to stick with the Intermatic brand thats never given me problems or failed going on 8 years old that was on my lizzard tank. Link below is the new timer I got.
