Hey GC, what up? I'm growing some weed and thought I'd share the experience, so here's my journal! Wednesday, 1/27: Started the other day with 3 seeds, and now I'm the proud papa of a little baby seedling. After showing the wife our new sprout, I placed her in the seedling/clone chamber of the (unfinished) cab about 2 inches under 3x26w@6500k CFLs. Such a bitty, wee, delicate thing... really hoping it's a girl! Thursday, 1/28: The baby leaves are a mm or so longer this morning. Hoping to see some obvious growth when I get home from work tonight. Saturday, 1/30: Today, I had access to a camera to snap a few photos... Still no noticeable stretching... seems to be perfectly happy sitting a couple inches below the light. This is about how far I got last time I tried this (in a window sill during an Oregon winter). Monday, 2/1: My baby girl is now like 5 days since popping her little stem into the light. The first set is about 18mm, the second set is coming along at 5mm. There's almost no stretch between the two, not sure if this is a good thing, bad thing, or even if it is a thing. Tuesday, 2/2: Day 6 - 21mm on the first set, 6 and 8 on the second. I really need to get a fan in there to push some air around. The only thing I have is way too strong I think. I guess I'll see what wally world has when I go back out tomorrow. Friday, 2/5: Day 9 - 25mm on the first set, 15mm on the middle leaflets, about 1.5mm on the outside leaflets. w00t! I'm growing some weed! Yesterday, I did a submersion watering (ala DrBud), let it soak for about 5 minutes, then after draining, I stuck it back into the chamber. When the other 2 beans sprout, I hope it won't take too long to get all 3 on the same watering schedule. Sunday, 2/7: Well, woke up to my 2 new seedlings. One is well on it's way, the other is just barely breaking surface (just a hint of green in the soil). #1 is doing GREAT, the 3rd node fan leaves are about 2mm already. I think I'm going to transplant as soon as it starts on the 4th node, then pluck the 5th node according to LBH's 4-way LST method. Wednesday, 2/10: The first seedling was showing signs of what looks like nute burn (check out the pics in post #10), so I decided to go ahead and mix up some new soil and do the transplant. I also transplanted the second seedling, which was probably a BAD idea, but we'll see how it goes. The third seedling never managed to lift it's head, so I yanked it. R.I.P. The soil mix I made up, was on the suggestion of folks at a couple different grow shops. I mixed 4 parts FFOF, 2 parts FFHF, and 1 part Perlite. The mix looks and smells wonderful, I hope the plants enjoy it. Sunday, 2/14: Well, well... I got 4 more seeds the other day. Stuck them in a wet paper towel. One cracked this morning, so I stuck it in a solo cup with my own 4/2/1 mix. I also took some pics of the other plants. Wednesday, 2/17: The latest bean broke the surface Monday morning. The other 3 appear to be dead. 40% germ rate on these bag seeds so far. Probably not too bad considering that the maturity of the seeds was likely not a concern when that weed was harvested and the seeds weren't likely cared for in a proper manner before meeting my wet paper towels. I also topped the eldest seedling on Monday. I was nervous about it at first, but once that 5th set got about 1/2" long, I could really see what I needed to do. Thanks to LBH for the 4-way LST Tutorial Friday, 2/19: The wife surprised me the other day with a roll of mylar, so I got some glued up in the cab (pics below). The girls are looking great today. I fingered them, found them a bit dry, so I prepared a weak MG feed for them. I needs to get some FF nutes or something, but won't be going back to Charlottesville for another 6 weeks or so. The MG will just have to do. Saturday, 2/20: Today was a fairly unproductive day, but I did embark on an experiment. I took my youngest plant, ripped it out of it's soil, then plugged it into my bubble cloner. Pics are in post 22. Friday, 3/12: Ok, I haven't updated this post in like 3 weeks, if you want to know where we're at now, go to this post. I'm not gonna update this post much anymore... just read through the thread.
haha... thanks. I'm getting some more fictional bagseeds later this week, hopefully, I can find at least a couple happy girls to inhabit my fictional grow box.
OK, I finally broke down and learned how to get pics from my phone. They suck, but are better than nothing I suppose... Such a bitty, wee, delicate thing... really hoping it's a girl!
Wow, if you haven't seen it yet, check out homostoner's grow, I just picked up the thread last night and read through all 20+ pages, and from what I can tell, this guy has been having SO much fun with his grow, the photography is incredible. I'm getting really pissed about my camera. It took pretty good macro shots... much better than my 1.3mp phone.
OK, for like $5, I picked up a 60x24x0.25" mesh screen. I started by unrolling it, then wrapping it around a piece of 4" PVC pipe to figure out where to cut. I could have done the math (4*PI()) or whatever, but I'm too lazy to pull out a calculator. After cutting, I popped 3 self-tapping screws to hold the mesh, then tied it off using bits of wire that came with the mesh to hold it together. I trimmed the thing down to about 12" (24" is too long for me). I then used the scrap to make an end-cap for the thing, again tying it with the wire from the mesh packaging. Now, to find me a carbon filter... I've seen several references to mats/pads/HVAC screens and whatnot... hafta check into those next trip to Lowe's and/or Home Depot. Oh... using the 4" PVC pipe, an elbow, and a 4" flange. I don't have the elbow yet, but will update when I put it all together. Now to find me a fan... I'm tempted to start out with a simple 130CFM muffin fan and see how that does...
Yesterday, we drove to UVA so my wife could meet with her hematologist and ophthalmologist. It was +14 hours before we got home, so no updates for yesterday. One funny-ass picture though: If you want smoke-free, get rid of the coal burner. Until then, I'll find me an out of the way place to smoke when I'm there. This may be cleaner coal, but there's no such thing as CLEAN coal. My little seedling is coming right along: 7 days since I started germination, and she (hopefully) seems happy as can be.
YAY!!! My little girl is about 18mm on her first leaves, and about 5mm on her second set. There's like NO gap between the sets (is this good or bad?) Also, can anyone tell me when I'll be able to get an indication if this is a sativa or indica dominate strain? The buds they came from gave a little couch-lock, but was overall a pretty good high. I'm really hoping that I can get a good heady high from her buds (assuming, of course, that she actually turns out to be a she). Still waiting on more beans, but it's been hell for both me and my buddy over the last few days.
Some pics of my first plant at day 9 Following Mechanibus' thread, I got inspired to pay a visit to the ReStore. I found a 4 fixture strip light, and 3 triple ceiling fixtures. Mounted, wired, and ready to provide 234 watts of CFL goodness in my flowering chamber. w00t!
Ok, so I'm so damned happy now... we got our tax refund, so it's shopping time! Biggest single purchase was an HTC Hero, which comes with a 5mp camera that seems to take some pretty good shots. I don't know how it looks when printed, but on the screen, the quality is great. Stopped by our local grow shop (if you can call it that) to pick up some soil and other goodies. This morning, I took the plunge, for good or bad, and transplanted my seedlings. The bigger one seems to be showing signs of nute burn (thanks MG!), so I mixed up soil (4 parts FFOF, 2 parts FFHF, 1 part Perlite). I dunno if this is a good mix, but I had folks at two different grow shops tell me that it's better than either soil straight up. I covered the soil of the bigger plant with some hydroton because it's prettier than the soil. We also stopped by Lowe's and Pet Smart to pick up some supplies for the buckets. Oh yeah, the Hero seems to take some half-way decent video as well. Check this out: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmOGrIRsfyU"]YouTube- My Bubble Buckets[/ame] Finally, I also got a hygrometer. I'm not happy with the results: I cut a small vent in the seedling chamber, I really need to get a fan in there. But, as you can see from the pic, I'm also getting pretty damned cold at night. I think I need to fire up some lights in the veg chamber (right below the seedling chamber) at night to warm things up a bit. I'm not sure how to attack the low humidity yet, I stuck a glass of water in the chamber, which seems to have brought the RH up a few points, but not nearly enough. *UPDATE* A few hours later, and the little plant seems to have picked right up! Hopefully, it'll make it. Also, the temp went down about 10* and the RH up to 43%. Needs to get this dialed in somehow...
Day 18 for #1 is looking beautiful. Not sure if I'm counting correctly, but I think it's started on it's 5th node (even as the 3rd and 4th nodes are still growing). Node spacing seems to be pretty tight (compared to many pictures I've seen here). Day 7 for #2, and we're growing! Got 4 more beans the other day, one of them cracked this morning, so I stuck it into a cup of soil. Hopefully, we'll have a new #3 out of it and hopefully, at least one more bean will decide to crack. I'm not having a very good success rate with these things so far... only 2 out of the first 6 cracked.
Monday was a busy day. First, I went ahead and topped my eldest plant by plucking the 5th set of leaves. Here's the before & after: Then my newest baby pulled itself out of the soil (pics from Mon, Tue, Today): I also got to go shopping on Monday! I did a little more shopping yesterday, picked up some ducting stuff to re-do my air filter and a 4' light fixture to set up for my maters 'n cukes. Here's some other pics from the last few days.
hope you don't mind me dropping in You've been busy...plants are lookin' good mind if I pull up a chair?
What's doin' doin? You're more than welcome here. As you can see, I'm just getting started, hoping to be harvested by the time we move in June. After that, it'll be legal-city in Oregon! Here's my first 2 plants, @ 23 and 12 days. #2 looks a little weird, it kinda went lop-sided when I transplanted it. I put some hydroton in the pot to help it out, but took it out too soon and she fell over. Oh well, she'll straighten up as she gets bigger. I raised the lights about 3/4" today to induce a little controlled stretching. Need #1 to grow a bit so I can get her spread out for a good scrogging (wow, that would sound really bad if you were to take it out of context). Yesterday, the wife surprised me with a roll of mylar for the cab. I had this glue left from a poker table I built a couple years ago. So, a little work with a knife and wellah! I can now post pictures of myself on the city! I've still got a bit of work on the cab. The flowering chamber, as you can see, is nearly there, just needs to be light proofed. Hopefully, between making cinnamon rolls and buscuits & gravy tomorrow, I'll have time to work on the cab a little bit.
Hey potlord How's it going? I'm cruising the city causing mischief I read back through your journal and noticed that you asked a question about sativa / indica...indica dominent strains tend to have wider / fatter leaves then sativas. Also noticed that you mentioned you don't have a fan blowing on your lil ones. IMO, a fan gently blowing on them will help strengthen the stalks and you may not need to worry about the lil one that's leaning a bit Nice mylar and LST job man! mylar's a PITA to work with IMO. Whole set up looks great glad I saw ya in Myles's thread
Hey man, just found your grow from LBH's thread. Looks good so far, plants look healthy, and the setup looks like it's coming along nicely. LBH mentioned something to you about your plant's nodes being very compact, kind of the opposite of stretching. I just finished vegging mine and the main stem never got over two and a half inches long, and was topped twice. She's now a few weeks into flower and still only about five inches tall, just spread out. Looking forward to seeing what becomes of all your ladies, pulling up a chair.
Welcome! Too bad you missed the lazyboy, but maybe you can trade with Doin when her hubby shows up. From the pics I've seen in the city and around the 'net, these girls are coming in quite short. Should make for a really good scrog. The only thing I'm worried about, is that they seem to be dragging on the soil. #1 already had one of her bottom-most leaves burn up (found it yesterday all curled up and super crispy). Not too worried about it though, as the rest of the plant is growing that nice, lush, dark green. BTW, thanks for the positive thoughts... I'm REALLY hoping that I get at least one girl out of these 3 plants. My schedule is running really tight... gotta be in jars by June, else I'll have to scrap this whole thing...
EDIT: WTF? Attachments not working today? Here's the girls! At 24, 13, and I dunno... View attachment 351756 View attachment 351757 View attachment 351758 View attachment 351760 View attachment 351761 View attachment 351762 I think this pic looks really cool. View attachment 351759 Oh well... here's #1. Check out the crispy leaf... what's up with that?
