Long story short my dad told me he has a box with a bunch of seeds from back in the 70's, including some "Acapulco Gold" seeds... Now I'm unfamiliar with growing, so I don't know if its even possible, but would it be possible to grow these seeds now?
Most likely no... but I guess there could be a miracle seed in there somewhere...... probly not tho.. only one way to find out. I will say, if that sumbitch does germ you better be ready to take care of it!
I would say that if they have been kept in a cool, dry, dark place all along then there is a good chance they will germ. Grain seeds were found stored for thousands of years in the tombs of Egyptian pharaohs, scientists took a few to germ them and they sprang right up. I'm not saying MJ seeds would stay viable for thousands of years, but 30 years under right conditions wouldn't surprise me at all. I wouldn't get my hopes up too much about the strains, though. I've been smoking since 1975, and while names like Acupulco Gold and Panama Red have some vintage appeal, I remember actually smoking those old strains, and the strains today are much more potent.
Go for it...I'm more the optomistic type...I think they will pop. I have read over on ICmag that for old seeds there was a technique...I can't remember where and what I read...probably smoked those memories away already.
I think if those strains were grown today with all the newest techniques and care they would compete with many potent newer strains today.
They are many generations behind in the selective breeding that has gone into today's strains. Given enough time to catch up I'm sure they would compete quite well.
Hmm... Well I'm not ready for any growing quite yet, but I'm gonna start doing some research. If somehow I can get one or two seeds to grow, I'd be happy even if it was the worst weed I've ever smoked, simply because of the history of it, ya know? 30 or 35 years ago, my dad bought some weed, and I'd be smoking the same exact stuff basicly..... would be real neat I think!
Seed from plants wont always be the same at all, remember they carry traits from two dif. pheno strains.
Im pretty sure the potency has risen alot because of selective breeding, and even if the seeds grew, they prolly wouldnt be a great plant. Not to say you souldnt try though!
meh. As i said, its more of like a sentimental sorta thing.... after learning that my dad's a pot-head too (and I never would have guessed it in these last 20 years!), I think the ultimate would be sitting around listening to Floyd or something, smoking weed that grew from a seed that my dad kept since the late 60's/early 70's, ya know? it will be a while before I get started with this project, but I will keep you guys updated!
