I am looking into starting a small scale grow for personal high quality buds. But I will have to do it somewhat stealthily. I am looking to grow possibly 2-4 plants at a time and possibly their clones for the next crop. I was wondering if I could use a plastic rubbermade outdoor storage closet about 3'X6'? It would be outdoors but would it still be decent for growing indoor strains? Any input would be appreciated. Looking for any help here. Thanks
Just make sure it stays warm enough. And a little security I.E. locks and such wouldnt be a bad idea. How are you planning on getting electricty to this shed??
Well that was one of our main concerns, temperature. Would the lights keep the plants warm enough? We would run the electric from the garage, having the small storage shed against that garage. I guess use power strips inside the shed....
i would done like a little temp test from day to night and then decide whether you need to put up some foam board to insulate it.
They might, but it'll take some trial and error to confirm. Just set up your system and monitor the temps. If you're creative when you get to 12/12 lighting you can run the light during the coldest times and maybe be ok. I'll refer to the other guys here for more info but in theory it works....I'm just used to having the opposite question.
The storage unit, is it 3L x 1W x 6H or 6L x 3W x 6H? Either way you can use it outside to grow indoor strains. The (main) difference between indoor and outdoor strains is that the sun > manmade light. Not necessarily anything to do with temps or humidity or other elements of climate because outside climate can be recreated indoors using fans, AC, heaters, humidifiers, dehumidifiers. As for the lights providing enough heat, that depends on your location and the type of lighting used. CFLs (this time of year) won't do the trick regardless of where you live. HPS MAY be enough heat if you live far enough south. But if not, just grab a small 1000W heater and put it on a timer to cycle on for 15 minutes every 15-30 minutes during the coldest hours of the day. A small heater should be less than $30 and take up very little room.
Thanks guys for the input. As for my location, I am about middle of the eastern coast.... I watched the tempature last week and night time lows seem around 30 degrees farenheit. Forecasted night time lows seem to be hovering around there for the month and starting to warm up. I was also thinking about a heater of some kind. The closet is 3ft deep, 6ft wide and 6 ft long. I had seen a like baseboard type space heater at home depot, with thermostat. I was thinking if I could run it hanging from the ceiling or side to try and keep the plants from direct heat. Probably use CFLs to make it easier to regulate the temp with just the heater. Opinions? What does home depot carry in way of lighting setups? Please keep any concerns you have coming, I would like to have it somewhat planned before I start buying supplies. Thanks
Lowes I know sells 400W HPS bulbs but dunno if they sell anything to screw them into. You should be able to get all kinds of CFLs from Home Depot, though, all sizes up to 65W which screw into a standard light socket ($17 each for the 65 watters). HTG probably has the cheapest HPS system on the net if you don't mind online shopping. I bought a 400W (complete) HPS system from them 5-6 years ago for $120 and if I'm not mistaken that same system is still the same price. I also bought a 600W HPS system with cool tube from them a year or so ago and the system worked twice and that's it so I put the 400W in the cool tube and it's still rockin' right along.
