The military is bound by the Posse Comitatus Act which restricts their participation in law enforcement activities. They can't have direct contact with civilians, including immigrants. I agree but it's not a very good show. The Army can build tent cities and provide support, they can't shoot anyone and that's the only thing that will stop this flood of people from knocking down our front door and making themselves a home in our pantry. Individuals, small units, or whole Army divisions can be re-assigned for other duties as needed or desired. It's done all the time. Any soldiers operating on the border will be under direction of the DHS, assuming Border Patrol legal status. Who cares? Let's just wait and see...
The reported intent of most of the migrants is to seek asylum, not to sneak into the country illegally. If that's true, sneaking across illegally doesn't solve their problem. Watch where they try to cross. It will be at a designated border station. The line will be endless. We'll be hearing about this until the 2020 election.
I don't doubt that it will somehow get escalated in order to involve the military in full. Those people are walking right into it, most of them just looking for a better life for their family and a job. Look at where they're coming from. Why would they not want to live here instead?
