Poll- 53% Say Pot Use is Socially OK

  1. Little by little cannabis is becoming 'normalized"!

Open marijuana use is socially acceptable, most say. (news – 2023)
Open marijuana use is socially acceptable, most say

Americans don't just think marijuana use should be legal — they also now think using it out in the open is socially acceptable, and most won't judge others for doing so or feel that they'd be judged themselves.

Today a slight majority of Americans consider using marijuana openly to be socially acceptable — a shift from when CBS News asked this question two years ago. Though this view is shared by a majority of Americans, most Republicans, conservatives, seniors over 65, and most Americans who regularly attend religious services disagree.

  3. Ah yes as always times change and opinions with them, give it a few more years and perhaps another generation to come and it will be over 70%

  4. As the naturally intolerant and older oppressionists die off, America will slowly become a different place… Certainly already bears little resemblance to the America of the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s,,, when I was growing up…

  5. I started using cannabis in 1967.:GettingStoned: Two years later Gallup did their very first poll on legalizing cannabis.

US Support for Cannabis Legalization Remains at Record 68%” (Gallup Poll - November 17, 2022) “Gallup pollsters first asked Americans in 1969 “Do you think the use of marijuana should be legal, or not?” support was at 12%. It wasn’t until 2013 that a majority of Americans (58%) supported reform—the year after voters in Colorado and Washington passed adult-use cannabis ballot measures.”

In late 2022 we had 68% in support of fully legal cannabis, while in 1969 it was 12%. 2022- 1969 = 53 years

    Looking at the percentages, we have 68% - 12% = 56%.

So, 53 years compared to 56 percentage points. We are gaining on average just over 1% per year. :yay:

In the article, “Americans overwhelmingly say marijuana should be legal for recreational or medical use” (Pew Research Center - 16 April 2021) they found that “Fewer than one-in-ten (8%) say marijuana should not be legal for use by adults.”

Even if the rate of decline slows down a bit, that 8% of prohibitionists isn’t going to last very long! :D

And as a side note, the fastest growing group of new/returning cannabis users happens to be senior citizens! Seems cannabis is great for all those "old age" aches and pains! :)

I’m well on to the shady side of “senior”, and would be using it everyday, or certainly most every evening, were it not for my wife’s attitude towards cannabis… It’s like consuming it in any way turns the user immediately into a serial killer, or at least a deviant beyond description… Even a low dose gummy on occasion causes close scrutiny until the next day…

I sneak in a hit or two when I can,,, when I know she’ll be gone a while… I keep hoping things will change, if Minnesota does legalize it…

  9. When I was young, and where I grew up, if you smoked weed you were labeled a drug addict. I never thought I'd see it legalized for medical use, let alone recreational. And my doctor encourages me to grow and use it. As if I've ever needed any encouragement. Lol

  10. Raised in different worlds,,, but that seemed to have little effect on my attraction to her, and I readily gave up weed… Seems strange looking back on it, but at the time it was an easy choice…

  11. @Haggis420 Makes perfect sense to me. when you were young, cannabis was just a "fun" thing. And you loved her more than "having fun" with cannabis.

Now, as you have aged, it has changed into a "medical" thing, and that changes your perception of cannabis.

I think you are right that it will be easier to to explain your use when cannabis is legalized in your state. Perhaps you should take her in to have a chat with your doctor after legalization? Hearing it from you is one thing- hearing it from a medical doctor may be quite another!

And since your doctor is agreeable to cannabis use, you might "turn him on" to my List of links to the latest studies and news articles on cannabis and the endocannabinoid system. You can find it here- “New 2022 Granny Storm Crow’s List” New 2022 Granny Storm Crow's List .

  14. My parents gave me shit the first few months after they found out but slowly accepted it. Mainly cause I was like 13 lol..

Everybody I know smokes, if they don't, they wish they could but their job prevents it.

2023 and it's mind boggling a company can allow someone to drink all they want, smoke tobacco all they want, take all the pills they want but weed is an issue. It's fuckin over, we won the war, just gotta clean up the mess..

  15. Speaking of parents and social acceptability....

My mother smoked with me for the first time on my wedding day (1968) at the reception at her house. She smoked with me a few times more. But cannabis just left her feeling "mildly tranquilized", and eventually decided she preferred her booze. And 14 years later, she died because of it at age 59.

When my dad visited me, (1984) I asked him if he'd mind if I smoked in front of him. He said, no problem, but he didn't want any, and just poured himself another drink. So I lit one up for me and my husband. Dad's only comment was that my pot (a nice little home-grown from a friend) smelled a LOT better than my brother's. For a "good old southern boy", my dad was rather open-minded.
